I just downloaded the new MAME v.81 and tried to reconfigure my gamepads, which worked just fine before I upgraded to v.81. The gamepads are recognized by the computer and windows, but when I hit tab and try to customize them for mame, buttons on the gamepad are not recognized. It is strange that it worked so well before I went awhile without playing and recently upgraded with new mame and roms. Could there be anything I am doing wrong? Any reason MAME would not be recognizing the gamepad when I know that my computer and windows does recognized them--ie system--device manager. Thanks for any help.

In mame.ini, make sure that joystick input is set to 1. If you do not have a mame.ini, run mame -cc to create it. Here is what this part of the file shoujd look like:
### Input device options ###
mouse 1
joystick 1
