Title: Advice on properly wiring an illuminated switch
Post by: shawnzilla on April 30, 2004, 04:29:59 pm
Can anyone advise me on how to wire this pushbutton switch?

http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F011%5F002%5F015%5F002&product%5Fid=275%2D671

I have successfully wired it so that the switch itself works for turning on and off my device, but I can't figure out how to get the led inside of the switch to illuminate. The switch itself has three prongs.

just tie the commons together, hook up the blacks to the switch (order doesn't matter but usually source on the bottom) and then hook up the ground to the switch which will allow it to illuminate.

I guess I'm still a little confused:

I am trying to create an on/off switch for an led (to go under my trackball), powered by a 9v battery.

I have already gotten the on/off action to work by going from the battery's positive terminal to one of the bottom prongs. Then I wired the other bottom prong to the LED's positive terminal (through a resistor, of course). Then, I've gone straight from the  battery's negative terminal to the negative terminal on the led.

Even if I wire the negative terminal to the third (side) prong of the switch, the light on the switch does not illuminate (although the on/off action of the led still works). What am I doing wrong?

thanks

ground the 3rd prong, the ground will illuminate the switch when in the off position.

Isn't the negative terminal on the battery considered to be the ground? If so, then the switch still isn't lighting when hooked up.

ah no i believe that would be considered the neutral, the + would be live, and for the switch to illuminate it needs to be grounded (for the 3rd time).

Cool, I think I get the concept now (forgive me, I'm new at this). One last question...what would be an easy way to ground the wire?

Thanks for your help!

Please check your link.  In that link it says that switch is for 125vac only.  So if you are using a 9v battery, you may never get the switch to light.  just like you used a resistor for your led, the same is probably true for the switch.  There will definately be internal circuitry or they used an incandescent to light it.  Either way, that particular switch will probably never light up with a battery.  Take it back to Radio Sh*t.. er I mean Shack...   and look for a 12V illuminated rocker switch.  they have them in the drawers.  Auto parts stores also have them and they are usually cheaper.   You can then power it with your pc power supply.

Hope this helps.
