Folks, I've finished all the wiring of my first sidewinder hack and have tested all components out with a few good games of punchout and gauntlet. Thanks to those who answered questions I had. I hope to submit my project to the examples page shortly.
I ended up finding cat-5 cable at home depot for 0.13 per foot. sweet. Also using the 4 way side of the actuator on my super joystick and diagonals are reacting fine.

Glad the Cat-5 was of help... I had big plans of using Cat-5 with the ends on it pluggable into a patch panel for swappable controls... but then I just went and built MameHac instead... :) hehe.

i used cat5 in the first incarnation of my CP, works great!, for my newest incarnation i used 25pin scsi cables cut in half and used for quickly connecting and disconnecting, multiple panels, works great, and belkin brand has 25 different colored wires in each which makes for easy wiring, the only hassle is that they ar etoo thin for wire strippers, cat5 is too, you have to use a knife or your fingernails.

Actually, I was able to use my wire cutter with the cat 5. I used the 22 gauge hole and bent the wire at a right angle. that secured it while I pulled it through. worked fine.
One other thing I had to jury rig was the actuator. My wood is 1/2 inch fiberboard and the groves on the steel shaft for the C ring weren't matching up properly regardless of the sleeve size I used. I ended up using the short sleeve and wrapped a single layer of scoth tape around the bottom of the shaft. That allowed me to jam on the actuator and it stays. no problem getting it off either.
