OK. So I've decided on 2xSupers for the 8-Ways and Happ Ms Pac-Man/Galaga Replacement Joystick for the 4-way :)
Now I need to figure out how to lay them out. I've done up a rough sketch of what I have though I'd like.
Does anyone see anything wrong with this ? Anything you 'just don't like' ? Colors hurting your eyes ?
I do want the 3 joysticks instead of using a T-Stick.
The panel is for vertical games only.
Shooters and classics I guess.

Did you put the red, blue orange buttons in that layout for a reason (i.e. using the style of a certain game)? If not then I suggest putting the blue and orange on the same "height". It might be a personal preference, but I'd put the buttons on the positions where my fingers would be and the three middle fingers (especially with your hand turned a bit) would have a problem sitting on the three buttons in your layout.
Like in a Neo Geo layout:

or so

(only the left 3 buttons then)

Thanks. That makes more sense. So now I have...

I'd make the player 1 and 4-way buttons the same color. I guess you'll hook them up to the same key.
I often see people using 4 buttons, allthough I don't think I played any games with 4 buttons, it might be worth checking out though. (if you didn't already)
You really should playtest your design too. Allthough I'm spending so much time "playtesting" my CP prototypes it kinda gets in the way of the actual building of the whole cab ;)

Why do some people make control panels with 6 buttons per player?
-
Um.... Street Fighter?
Speaking of SF, does anyone know what colors the original SF cabinet buttons were? I'm about to make an order to Happs I'm and trying to decide button colors. For some reason I keep thinking it was a row of three yellow buttons and a row of three red ones.

Choose what you like best. There have been too many SFII pushbutton color combinations to mention.
-
I always thought it was 2 red, 2 white, 2 blue. the same colors in the same column.
-
Why would you go to all the trouble of building a CP and not have 6 buttons for each 8 way stick?
-
On the other hand, why have 6 buttons if you are only going to use 4? ;D
or
Why only have 6 buttons if you could have 7 and also play all NeoGeo cames comfortably?
-
Well I only want 3 instead of six as its only for vertical games.
I'm rotating a monitor.

Those were the colors for Championship Edition. What about SFII Turbo? And SFII Hyper Fighting? And SFII The New Challengers? And SFII The World Warrior? And SFII Turbo The World Warrior Hyper Fighting The New Challengers Rainbow Edition Grandmaster Challenge X v45.a? See what I'm sayin'? They all weren't the same color.

button color... just pick a combo or a color that matches your cab... that's all....
unless its for NeoGeo specifically... then the 4 buttons always comes in specific color ??... (I'm not sure about that...) :P :P

For space reasons, I almost did not have 6 buttons, because I wanted 4 joys for Smash TV. But I was able to save some space and managed to fit them between each joystick pair. I don't think I'll ever use them, but they are there if someone else wants to. However, 1" narrower on my CP and those buttons would have been history.
I'm always amazed by the number of cabs that actually have 6 buttons. I think it's an age thing. I grew up with the classics so I've never played any game that required 6 buttons. In fact other than defender or Asteroids I don't think I've ever used more than 3 buttons.

I'm not sure but I think that you have the colors out of order.
I think the order is blue, white, red.
-
I'm pretty sure at least 1 version of SF (in US), the button color is in the order red, white, blue... (as the color of the US flag)....
-
Sorry, but red white and blue is the dutch flag ;D
