Title: neo candy 29 + jpac == nightmare
Post by: jinkusu on April 25, 2004, 10:07:23 pm
I tried posting this message to another forum linked from www.ultimarc.com, but didn't get any responses... I figured I would try my luck here.  So here's the message duplicated:

First things first, I have a Snk Neo Candy 29 sit-down cabinet with a
Hitachi GMK-29FSN 29" 15.75kHz monitor. (Do any of you have one of these
things by chance?) This is the monitor that came with the cabinet and should
be able to display standard neogeo resolution (which i believe is 304x224 @
60 or so.)

I have successfully used advcfg/advv to get the picture on my monitor to
stop rolling, but it never stays in the same place. In other words, it's not
always centered. this is always a vertical issue. sometimes the picture
looks like:

<pre>
________
  ________

(forgive me, this forum doesn't seem to accept the <pre> html tags) and sometimes like...
  ________

(normal)
________

I am not saying that the picture is rolling, just that when it changes
resolution modes, it's like it starts drawing at some random point. The
picture is stable, just totally offcentered. I have not been successful in
"using the arrow keys" to center the picture -- because it doesn't just move
the picture a bit, it's just like it restarts the random drawing at some
other point.

Also, the two LEDs on my JPAC have never lit up. I have the ps/2 JPAC, not
the usb. It seems to function properly other than that... When I'm in a boot
screen or in dos before a TSR is loadede, i get the double picture like it's
converting. When i'm in arcadeos, it displays fine (other than the offset
picture). Am I doing something wrong? Could the unit not actually be
receiving a proper signal? Is the unit injured?

The guy with pictures up at pyronious.com has the exact same cabinet as me,
but I haven't heard back from him yet.

For a video card I'm using an ATI Rage Pro II Dvd card (i think) with the
ATI Rage Pro AGP 2x chipset (the only thing i can read off the card at the
moment).

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Can you adjust the vertical hold knob to find a sweet spot where most or all resolutions look right?

I have replied by email, but the first thing to check is that the J-PAC is actually powered up if no LEDs are lit (ie keyboard cable connected to the PC).

As far as the vertical hold goes, adjustment causes the picture to roll.  The picture is totally stable, it's just like it doesn't know where to start drawing from.

There is a keyboard connected to the J-PAC unit.

Is the monitor attached to the jamma harness??? I have a sega cabinet without the Jamma harness. The vertical and horizontal connections from the VGA card might be the issue. I had to attach the horizontal and verical sync together and send it through the horizontal sync(i think.. mine weren't labeled so try both it won't hurt anything). When I connected the Vertical sync and the Horizontal sync to the the monitors Vertical and horizontal inputs, I got a problem similar to what you describe. The picture would never line up and would change as it went in and out of programs. The horizontal hold was super sensitive, adjust it a little and the screen would flip.  Try this ...hope it helps :) ;)

There also has to be a cable from the JPAC to your computer so it can get the 5V from the ps2 port

First of all, I have a PS/2 JPAC unit (or had, before ii returned it to try a new one per andy's advice), so I have no idea what cable I would be hooking up to the JPAC unit other than a keyboard extension cable, the keybaord itself, and vga line from the pc to the JPAC.

Yes, the monitor is attached to the JAMMA harness.  I just received an ArcadeVGA card and am now waiting for the returned JPAC unit.  Hopefully this will solve all my problems. =]

Yeah that should be all you need.  Just was double checking since there was someone last week that just plugged a keyboard into the jpac without plugging in a keyboard extension from the computer to the jpac, so the jpac was not getting any power.
