Title: re-finishing metal control panel
Post by: coffeemaker on July 23, 2002, 01:47:01 pm
I have an old metal control panel that has most of the plastic covering worn off. I was thinking of completely striping it down to the bare metal and re-applying a new covering over it.

Does anyone know where I can find thin plastic veneer/laminate that bend and be glued over this control panel? I don't want to use contact paper since that's too thin and looks cheap. I was hoping for the same material that's used on alot of existing cabinets like Robotron's CP.

Thanks!

Try plotter/cutter vinyl.  It's contact paper like, but it isn't nearly as fragile and doesn't bubble and stretch.  It's normally used for sign printing but you can find it on the net in loose rolls if you search for it.  I'm about to get some syself.   The best part is that it's a printable surface.  it won't fit in a normal printer as is, but if you cut a few inches off of the roll you can stick it in your printer and print on it.  Get a role of white and you can make decals for your cp and cab rady to cut out and stick on.  I haven't used it for this application yet, but I've checked it out and it should do well.

I  have swappable metal control panels and used something called 'pica' vinyl from Happs.  It's very sturdy
and kinda boring when compared to most control panels.  I used black and it fits in with the rest of my cab
and is easy to clean up etc.

What about something clear to stick on top of custom CP graphics? You'd think there'd be something other than clear contact paper out there. I've been looking for some time but nothing has turned up. Anyone have any ideas?
