Title: Building MVS 6-Slot, need two more games!
Post by: glitch77 on April 22, 2004, 07:03:13 pm
I am making my first "Real" arcade game (MAME machine, and a Galaga that is MAME driven are the other two), and I need a couple ideas for other games. I am looking mainly at fighters, and here is what I have so far:

1. Art of Fighting (old favorite, have to have it)
2. Samuria Showdown IV
3. SVC CHAOS [SNK vs. Capcom] (Holy crap!)
4. Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers

I have a 6-slot MVS system, so I need two more games to fill the holes.

Any suggestion?

Thanks!

I know it's not a fighter, but there is no better Neo Geo game!!!

I am soooo tempted to put MSLUG5 in there, its a bit pricy though.... And doesnt fit the fighter theme.

We shall see!

I played the Last Blades and they just arent my style. I dunno. They do look and sound very impressive, might have to consider them if I find them cheap enough.

I dont like the origional Fatal Fury that much, but I would suggest selling that cart on ebay, most, if not all MVS cars are being sold easily. Very few (even the oldies) slip by with no bids.

Thanks!

glitch77:  What is a MVS 6-slot?  Just curious and trying to learn.

The Neo*Geo used a motherboard that used cartridges, like a Super NES. You simply bought a cart, pulled the old one ouf of the motherboard, and popped the new one in.

There are also multiple-slot motherboards (M.ultiple V.ideo S.ystem). These let you plug in several games, and let the player select which he or she would like to play.

There are four different types of MVS motherboards: 1 slot (single game), 2 slot, 4 slot, and 6 slot. These allow one cabinet to house up to 6 games at one time, saving space.

:D

Have you considered Bust a Move?  It might add some balance to your current selection, if you're not wanting to get Metal Slug.

I love bust-a-move..... Definatly a possibility. Would also keep my girlfriend happy!

Might fill the last two slots with MSLUG4/5 and Bust a Move. :D

Keep the ideas comin in! (Especially more fighters!)

More fighters!  This is gonna be one testosterone-packed cab.  How about something from King of Fighters.  I love that series.  I play '97, mostly.  I hear that '94 is good, too.

If you're willing to put down big bucks, Garou is a very impressive fighter--considered by many to be SNK's finest.  Or, you can wait it out and put down even bigger bucks for their as-of-yet unreleased magnum opus:  Garou 2.

I tried out Garou, very interesting looking game, allthough it seems to remind me alot of Real Bout 2. Might be my imagination.

Definatly on the list!

Thanks for the info.  That sounds awesome.  Do you all neo geo games have the same button configurations?  Maybe just use 2 out of 4 on a certain game, etc.?  Just curious.  This sounds like a great idea.  One I'd like to explore as well.

I would fill it with metal slug X or 3 and Puzzle Bobble 2 (this is an MVS cart right?!) .  Metal slug 2 and 3 were better than 5.  The vs mode of Puzzle Bobble never gets old.  Puzzle Bobble 2 vs mode is better than one because it has variety mode with different levels.  Your cab sounds awesome though.  My school has boatloads of Neogeo Cabs just lying around in the Dorms.  No one ever plays them.   I would really like to take one of them off their hands.

No prob.

For the most part yes, they do. Most all the games use 3-4 buttons, some using only two. But they can be mixed since no changes are needed to the CP. You can have a two-button flying game and a 4-button fighter in the same cab with no problems.

Just nab yourself a NEOGEO cabinet sometime, one with a mobo allready in it (few hundred bucks well spent), and get a few carts, and your all done. :)

Metalslug 4 and 5 are not Neo-Geo games, they run on a chinese system called PGM (poly games master?) SO they won't run on an MVS system - they also cost um... a lot.

Not a great loss since Metal slug 1/2/X/3 were much better anyway.

I would have to say either Garou, Rage of the Dragons or one of the KOF series.

Mentioned already, but I would go with Garou and Last Blade/2.  I never really liked the KOF series very much...

I'll probably add King of Fighters 2002 to the list as soon as I can find it at a decent price.

One more!

Where did you get your Neo cabinet just out of curiosity? Once my MAME cab is finished *is this semester over yet?* a NeoGeo cab is my next project FOR SURE.

And was Baseball Stars 1/2 on an MVS cart?.... cuz fighters be damned, I'd put one of those in there. Man I loved Baseball Stars.

I always really liked Sengoku.  Kind of a fighter but not really.....

I would go with Mark of the Wolves and either KoF 98,99,2000 or 2003.  Dude, you can't have a Neo cab without a KoF in it (my favorite) and MotW is just an unbelievably excellent fighter.  ;)  If you are looking for something inexpensive Neo games check out this ebay user:

http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=yaton6262&include=0&since=-1&sort=3&rows=25

I have bought from him several times and although the carts are dirty, they are also dirt cheap and they all have worked too.  :D  You should be able to get KoF 98 or 99 of him for ~$30-35 after shipping...

A Metal Slug or Bust a Move would be nice as suggested too... BTW, there might be PGM versions of Metal Slug 4 and 5 (not sure, but I have never heard of them being for that system before) but you can certainly get them both for the Neo Geo as well, so if that is what you want they would work too...

I just finished a project where I consolized a Neo Geo MV-1C board!  :D  I should post that up in the projects some time...  ;)

Edit:  Just posted some stuff about the project mentioned above.

The new games (SVC CHAOS, Mslug5, etc), yes, are being migrated over to the new NEOGEO setup, making the game and the hardware all one peice, and has only a JAMMA harness to hook to. This was done to increase the ease of cabinet conversions (IE plugging SVC into a Tekken4 cabinet and changing the marquee and being done, which is done alot.). But, there are still MVS carts being made of the new games. They are rare, but not nonexistant. They wouldnt want to screw over everyone with a 4-6 slot mobo, seeing as how thats where the money came from for all these years.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

New list:

1. Art of Fighting (old favorite, have to have it)
2. Samuria Showdown IV
3. SVC CHAOS [SNK vs. Capcom] (Holy crap!)
4. Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers
5. The King of Fighters 2000 (I seem to like it a bit better)

Number 6 is quite the toss up... Garou looks good, but might be too much of the same thing. I will do some playing tonight and see what I can come up with.

Thanks fo everyones help!

Thanks.  ;D  If you haven't played MotW yet give it a try.  I think that might convince you that it should be the 6th game in the cab...  ;)

I may have to get with you sometime to discuss some stuff. I am building a Supergun with built-in speakers and LCD screen (portable Art of Fighting? I think so!), and may need some help. I'll let ya know!

I can't believe there haven't been more people suggesting Windjammers!  :o

It's not a fighting game, but it is one of the BEST Neo Geo games.  I don't think the carts are that expensive either.

Just my $.02

I know its not a fighting game, but it is by far my favorite NeoGeo title and the best sports title for the system. . . what about Neo Turf Masters.  Its an expensive cart and hard to come by, but well worth it.

Portable, wow!

I second the Neo TurfMasters suggestion.  I even prefer it to the Golden Tee games (the highlight of any Golden Tee is usually the simple fact that it's played while getting rat-arsed drunk in the local pub).

Also not a fighter, but I love Last Resort.

Windjammers, Turfmasters, Metal Slug, Bust a move, Puzzle D pon, Blazing star anyone?

Any of those games will get a lot of play from non fighting fans.

In fighting:  Waku Waku 7, Garou, Art of Fighting 3.
Any

75% of the neo fighters are really fun!

I would go with Puzzle Bobble or a Metal Slug Game (2 or 3). Although they are not fighters the will probably still get alot of play. It's not like you can't always change it.

Am I the only person that didn't care for SVC:Chaos?  Just seemed sloppy to me, but opinions vary. ^_^

My dream MVS-6 setup:

Garou - MoTW
Metal Slug 3
Samurai Showdown 2
Magical Drop 3
Kabuki Klash
Sonic Wings 3

One can always dream.  ;D

Wow, putting a metal slug in there is going to rack up your cost by a lot!  Those things are damn expensive!!
Anyways, here's my suggestion for any successful MVS cabinet:

Samurai Showdown 4  -  (must!)
King of Fighters 2002    (2k has way too many infinites)
Real Bout Fatal Fury 2
Mark of the Wolves    (pricey but extremely good)
Metal Slug 3                (best in the series, but very pricey)
SvC Chaos Plus         (get the bootleg version or you're going to have to deal with the sh**y controls of the original, yes Plus fixed the controls and was much better unfortunately.  Poor SNK)

...Poor SNK...

Hey now.  Don't confuse the SNK of old with the chop shop Playmore.  ;)
