Title: need some help sound problems and game launcher
Post by: crsdawg on April 20, 2004, 06:13:55 pm
i've been wrestling with this problem for a couple days now, i'm hoping someone on the board can help me out.

at first everything is working fine, after i boot gl i can select a game and play, it works fine, the sound is perfect. once i exit the fist rom and select another is where i get into trouble. the second rom boots ok, but will have no sound. at this point the sound will not come back no matter which rom i start and i have to reboot the comp to get it going.

when i start the roms from a dos prompt i don't have this problem. i can start rom after rom with sound which is why i think the fe is to blame. another weird thing is that if i run gl in debug mode i also can run rom after rom with sound.

so far here's what i've done to try to solve the problem:

reinstalled gl multiple times

reinstalled mame multiple times

reinstalled sound drivers multiple times

updated windows

set -soundcard 1 in the mame.cfg and also had gl set that command after the rom name on launch

tried a couple different mame versions, all older since i'm dealing with a slow computer.

i know there are other things i've tried but this is what comes to mind.

system specs:
pII 350
ess1869 onboard soundchip
mame 35b91b
game launcher

thanks in advance for any help.

I had similar problems with an old HP pc that had ESS onboard sound.  I was never able to solve the problem.  Eventually the sound stopped working in DOS, and I could never get it to work in DOS again.  I did work in windows.

The final solution was to get another PC.

heh heh, not exactly the answer i was looking for.  thanks,  maybe the ess chip is my problem. i'll try putting a sound card in there.

That would probably work as well.  I think there are issues with the ess drivers.

I tried to put a sound card in the old HP, but that thing had this  cage/daughterboard assembly to hold the expansion cards and I think it was brojken.  I tried modems, nic cards, and sound cards in it and the PC would not recognize any of them.
