Title: Registry Problems
Post by: ErikRuud on April 16, 2004, 09:35:34 am
My MAME cab is having registry problems. Anyone want to reccomend a registry cleaner for Win98se?

Every once in a while I would get a DOS looking message (before windows was up)stating that there was a registry error and that the PC would restart to fix it. I would hit OK and the PC would reboot.  Sometimes after that, I would get a simular message right after the desktop was visisble.  Again click OK and the PC would come up OK.

2 days ago, I went to a site that had Chinese characters.  i clicked OK to download the chinese language support.  The download failed and a window reccomended using "Windows Update".

So off I go to MS land to try the windows update.  I attempted to update to IE6-SP1.  The upgrade started out OK, but then it gave an error, I don't have the exact text on hand, but it said something about CRL. I clicked OK on the error message, and the install seemed to continue OK.  The Install finishes, and restarts th PC.

On the restart  get the DOS looking registry error.  Click OK, the PC reboots, and then I get the Windows registry error. I click OK and I get the DOS looking registry error. And on and on........

After six or seven reboots, it will finally come up without an error. Until I reboot again, and then it starts the reboot cycle over again.

  A couple suggestions:

1) Check for spyware. This is the first thing I recommend anyone do if they're having weird problems with thier computer that seem to happen for no reason.

Download and install Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/). Make sure you update it first (Online -> Update -> Search for updates), then go through the full scan, Immunize, then Make sure you know what all your ActiveX classes do and that you need them (If you're unsure you can delete them all in IE -> Tools -> Internet Settings -> Settings -> View Objects. It won't hurt anything, it will just cause IE to redownload them when you need them, i.e. Flash, Windows Update, etc). Make sure your BHOs are all verified and you understand everything that's going on under the System startup page.

2) I found this while googling for your problem: http://www.paraknowya.info/pky/archives/000034.html

Screaming,

I already have SpyBot and AdAware on the PC, and it is Immunized.  I don't install much on this machine other than MAME and other emu related stuff.

I'll run some scans just to be sure.

Thanks for the link. I do have an ATI video card, so I might have to look into that as well.

This article might cover my problem.

At least it gives me something to check.

I've had good luck with the WinDoctor portion of Norton Systemworks.  (And bad luck with MacAfee's suite).

You can get the 2003 version for like $10 if you search on www.pricewatch.com.

Unfortunately your only true solution is to upgrade to 2000/xp.....  98's registry eventually turns to jelly no matter how careful you are. Unless you wish to re-install periodically (which is a good idea anyway) your probably better off upgrading.

TuneUp Utilities 2004 did the trick.

The system is all happy now.

I running a memory test just to be sure.

Howard,

I don't have a copy of 2000 or XP to put on the machine, it came witn no OS.

I have three PC's running 98se.  This is the first time I had anywhere near this much trouble.

Two of them have have been on it for years.  The oldest run ran 95 for four years and has now been running 98 for 3 years with no problems.
