Title: The 48 hour Dynamo Challenge
Post by: paigeoliver on April 14, 2004, 10:58:44 pm
Ok, I have exactly 2 days to do a complete Mame conversion on a Dynamo cabinet before the buyer arrives to pick it up.

Can I do it?

Control panel will have a Happ's 2.5" trackball with serial interface board, 2 wico 8-way joys and 3 buttons per player. Player 2's layout will be reversed to allow enough room around the trackball.

Note, cabinet already had trackball and serial interface board installed, everything else that was in it at the time has to be changed.

Pictures from day one.

Eww, the new monitor is properly mounted, but it looks like updog.

Ah, that is better (will be a zillion times better once the bezel and glass are in place).
Paint is still VERY wet in this picture.

maybe you can take off the back part of the plastic case....

if it still poke out a little... then drill/cut a hole in the backboard....

48 hr is really tight to do a cab with good quality....

good luck.....

Well, if you got all the parts, I don't see a problem with you getting done.  You've got so many cabinets already I have to presume that you know these things inside and out like the back of your hand.  Shouldn't be hard for you.  I wouldn't expect to see any custom artwork though.

Yeah, try decasing/decaging the monitor, you might be able to buy those needed inches.  I have to do the same thing with my Moon Patrol.

All done except for wiring. I came up to the library to post this picture before I go back and finish up the wiring.

Also, the monitor was going to poke out no matter WHAT I did, as that is Dynamo's "mini/cabaret" cabinet, which shipped with a 13" monitor, and my buyer demanded a 19" one. Taking the back off the monitor would have only gained me an inch, and it still would have poked out.

I have also just about destroyed another 1 1/8" holesaw, my current one probably has enough bite left in it for maybe another 10 holes, if I am lucky.

I really dig that kick plate foot plate at the bottom. Take the case off of the monitor and relocate the chassis board. Zip ties are your friend and it can be done with some effort. ;) Looks really awesome.

Where did you get those black player buttons?
I know Peale was selling them at one time but I think ran out of them.

Wiring is complete, everything worked first time. I set up Gamelauncher.

No time for fancy monitor tricks, and anyway, the tube is physically too deep to not poke out.

Those are standard black buttons with the player start stickers added to them. Someone (I forget) made those sticker sets a while back, and I got a bunch from him, but I am starting to run out of them now. I actually wanted to go red, but I did not have enough matching red buttons to have red start buttons too (I have more red buttons, but they are not identical, and look slightly different, and I am picky about stuff like that).

Twas Nanuu that made them.

I have not run out of them.  I'm going to be doing a 'lottery' of sorts for the remainder.  I'm also going to be doing another run in the near future.

Hey Paige if you are going through hole saws quickly why don't you invest in a Greenlea punch?

Promises, Promises!   ;D  (Seriously though.  I would buy like 7-10 each myself if you did another run.)

Paige, nice work.  Looks really clean.

Yeah, I think I'd really like some of those black buttons.  Not trying to hijack the thread..but...

That cab looks pretty nice though!

Hmm, buyer might be flaking out on me. Haven't heard from him since thursday, when he indicated that sunday looked better than saturday for pick up.
