Title: Load snap noise
Post by: SeanFu on April 11, 2004, 01:57:14 pm
Whenever I first turn on one of my monitors, the picture goes in and out of focus until the monitor makes a loud "snap" noise and then it's in focus.

Anyone know what this is?

Do you store your cab somewhere cold or damp, such as a garage?

My cab is in my garage and the monitor pops every 20 seconds or so when I firt turn it on. With each pop the screen flickers.

I think it's because the tube has got damp or cold. It doesn't do it if I stick an electric heater in the cab for 30 mins to an hour. I don't actually know if popping is a problem but it doesn't sound good! I know I should ideally store it inside the warm.

If stored/used in damp, moist, or outdoor locations moisture or condensation can get into the picture tube socket on the neckboard and corrode. It's also possible your picture tube has a short circuit internally.

Might it be the power-on degauss?  Some monitors have degauss circuits that are fairly loud, and it would explain the momentary loss of focus.

I don't think it's the degauss.  Occasionally it will pop and the screen will zap down to a spot for half a second and then come back.  It can really make you jump.

It only does it really loud occasionally, but it has that feeling that one time it's going to "pop" and that will be it...  No more monitor.
