I do not know of any "Discs of Tron" games in my area, otherwise I would answer this question myself. In the game "Discs of Tron", does the push/pull spinner have two or three distinct positions (like up, middle, down) or does it have a complete range of motion (like it has it's own complete axis to move freely up and down)?
Additionally, does anyone have any info on building their own push/pull spinner? (I would buy one, but $99 is WAY too much for it's limited application in my desktop console, plus I am determined to build one)
Thanks,

To my knowledge all it did was activate a switch at the upper and lower ends of it's travel. See 1UP's DOT spinner page found here (http://www.1uparcade.com/projects-oscarupdown.html) if you want to build your own.

That design seems like it would warp your spinner light cutter deal and prevent the spinner from spinning while in the up or down position.

btw... expect 99+ for a real one on ebay...
and take note to this.
Its NOT really worth it for ANYONE... unless..
1) You like spinner games (runs them all).
2) Your not impressed with a 5minute spin time... it has good spin... but not the smoothest.
3) You LOVE DOT!
4) And your good enought to get to level 7 or more
Its only about 30-40 bucks more then a non-dot spinner.... So 30 bucks for another game?
I spent 80 on a 720 controller and don't feel bad about it... But that was my favorite game.. I would like a DOT spinner one day.. but I don't know if I am good enough to warrant it.

My tron hack joystick has a hat button that I have mapped to up/down if I were ever to get to level 7 :) I love DOT but boy is it hard.

Zwackery also uses the up/down function.
In answer to the original question though, it depends on how you look at it.
The spinner moves freely up/down, and has a spring-assisted middle position.
When not being pulled up, or pushed down, the spinner sits in the middle position.
When pulled up, or pushed down, it TRAVELS freely, but doesn't DO anything until it hits a leaf switch, so there are really only 3 FUNCTIONAL positions (all the way up/all the way down/somewhere in the middle).
Unless you really HAVE to have the up/down function, you might consider stepping down to one of Oscar's other models to save money.
His spinners are much better quality than anything you could build for the same price.
(Assuming you don't run your own machine shop, and have access to discount bearings and such).

Hee hee, if you pony up the hunnerd bucks for the DOT spinner, trust me, you'll get to level 7. How else could you justify it? ;D
