Title: Plexi-Glass Desktop Console?
Post by: NoBonus on April 08, 2004, 04:19:45 pm
Has anyone ever attempted a all-Plexi-Glass desktop console?  I am considering it.  I could use multiple layers of plexi-glass with artwork inbetween them here and there, but best of all, I could see the guts of my desktop console.

I do not know what my problem is, but ever since the mid-nineties when they started putting out all of the see-through appliances, I'm hooked.  I love that garbage!  I bought two of those clear phones, just to get both color schemes.  I could drop a little black light in my clear console and BLAMMO! a new and improved (for me) arcade experience.

So, any thoughts on the plexi-glass project??  I realize it will be a bit flimsy, but I think this could be avoided using two or three layers of plexi-glass and those little plexi-glass columns for interior support.

Thanks,

There was a link to a pic around here that was a cab made from Plexi. Someone around here should have it.

You can probably find anything clear you need at this site if you can't at your local hardware store

That link was outstanding!  They also carry brightly colored large plastic cutting boards that, when you think about it, would make an ideal top to an arcade console if you want no artwork on it.  It easily washed, won't chip or scratch and it's water proof.  Everyone should visit that link, you can get all kinds of good stuff there including knobs that may be usable as spinner knobs!

It's plastic, so in fact it WILL scratch.

There was an example a few days ago. See:Absolutely gorgeous CP (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=17592;start=0). There is an e-bay auction selling one.

I'll try to add a thumbnail here.

Okay, I think I have chaged my mind on plexi-glass...

Referring to the scratching, I was talking about cutting board material... the scratches wont show up much.  Look at the pic:

Ehhhe, now that's a good feature; Being able to cut food on your CP  ;D

I get your point (about plastic like that not showing scratches), but I think a wooden (or metal) panel with a single color laminate will end up looking better. I personally don't like bolts showing on the CP and I don't see that working on a plastic CP. I guess I'm a clean shaven CP fetish  :o

Of course if you don't mind (or even like) bolts, you fancy one of the colors they sell it in and you are able to purchase said material then it could be a nice alternative ;D

Well, you could clean it with the harshest of cleansers.  The ones online are pro-level cutting boards, but I bet I could find some nifty ones at any discount store...   Man, that plexi-glass setup gave me vertigo...  too much going on...
