Title: Sinistar Idea for daveb
Post by: Tiger-Heli on April 08, 2004, 11:39:29 am
I was bored at lunch and wondering what Sinistar joysticks were fetching these days and ran across this:

http://coinop.org/kb_dl.aspx/kb/gametech/sinistar%20standard%20joystick%20hack.html

It's an article on how to hook up a standard 8-way joystick to work with a Sinistar board.

The same thing I would think should work with daveb's new 49-way interface.  I'd be interested in the results if anyone wants to test it out.

Also be interested in how it works in standard joystick games. . .

UPDATE - This website http://users.telerama.com/~rickr/mamecab.html says (and I confirmed on Urebel's site) that since 0.77, MAME analog + has supported 49-way joysticks.

So . . .

Website A says that I can use an 8 way in place of a 49-way, and Website B says a 49-way works in analog +, then . . .

Wouldn't I be able to wire up an 8-way per site A and connect and use it directly in Analog + (without Daveb's new interface).

I'm sure there's some flaw in my circular logic here, but could someone point it out, or else would they be able to tell me exactly how to connect this?

if you are trying to aviod the cost of the stick - then you might as well play with a typical analog stick.

using a digital controller with sinistar will not work well enough to controll the speeds.  Even with an 'interpreter'... its accelerations will be 'set'  and either too fast or too slow.

The flaw in your logic is that you would end up with identical results to just using an 8-way to play Sinistar in regular Mame anyway.

Yep Paige is right. Using this hack on an original Sinistar machine is a crime as it will completely ruin the playability and feel of the game. Try playing Sinistar in MAME with an 8-way and you'll see why. They may claim that it can even emulate the adjustable speed of the original 49-way stick but that is mostly bs. A digital stick CANNOT mimic an analog stick nor can it mimic a 49-way optical stick no matter how you wire it. That technical info is more geared towards shops that do quicky restoration jobs on classics just to turn them over to make a quick buck. Some resto shops don't care about authentic controls and would surely use a hack like this just to get the game working. They are betting that the shlub that buys it isn't a knowledgeable collecter and won't know the difference. Its actually a shame that a lame hack like this was ever invented.
