Title: List of Wide Release Games? Anyone?
Post by: wakerlet on April 08, 2004, 10:49:29 am
Hello,

I'm trying to put together a list of rom names that were available in wide release in the US.  That is, a list of popular games in the US.  I hate having to go through the entire list of games just to find the good ones.

Thanks,
Todd

Just because it wasn't in wide release doesn't mean it wasn't good.

I'm truely sorry, but I have to say it.

This is by far the dumbest question ever asked here.....

Wide release?  Do you think emulation people actually keep track of that stuff?

They only people that have this type of data are the game companies themselves.

Who:

a.  are mostly defunct with and exception of a handful
b.  can't easily find 20-30 year old sales records
c.  aren't going to tell you "yeah that game sucked"
d.  won't be willing to share their sales records in any useable form

Regardless wide release tells you nothing.  Dragon ball Z could be considered a "wide release" game in America and it's one of the worst games ever.  It became popular because of the millions of geeks watching cartoon network wanting their dragon ball z game to play while sitting around in their dbz under-roos. DOAXBV  was a top seller, and if you get over the fact that there are pretty girls in it it's one of the worst games ever.  Long story short the public is stupid and will buy anything if it's properly marketed.  Many many popular games suck while many many obscure ones are great.

I really hate to smack ya down like that, but geese man think before you post.  ;)

If you want to put together such a list yourself, KLOV has the information you need.  http://www.klov.com

A game that you think sucks may be someone else's favorite. So it's useless to ask people's opinions about their favorite games.

Just get a front end that allows random game selection and play a few random games each day and note the ones you like. In a few months you'll have a nice list.

Alternatively, just search the Internet. Here's a link, for example:

Some of these games aren't in MAME, but you should get the idea.

Klov information isn't always correct. Ask anyone who has ever fried an SCI board testing it in a JAMMA cabinet, or vise versa.

Also, what do you define as "Wide Release".

Many pre Space Invaders games only did a couple hundred units at best. While most 80-83 era titles did a few thousand. The number of units sold does not always correspond to the quality of the game. For example, Kangaroo outsold Crystal Castles 2 to 1, yet few people will claim Kangaroo as a better game (I have owned them both).

Actual numbers on conversion games are pretty much impossible to find. Some were good, some weren't. Some of the best ones didn't sell well, and are nearly impossible to find (City Connection, Penguin Kun Wars).

Going by the Klov definition of "Wide Release", then it would be pretty much EVERYTHING other than about 20 or 30 prototype games that are in Mame.

Funny... my list would be the exact opposite.  In fact, I think so little of Street Fighter I wouldn't pay the extra $6.00 to put two more buttons per player on my cab.   ;D
