Title: Tron style flightstick?
Post by: JesterDEV on April 06, 2004, 10:58:02 pm
I have very little room on my control panel, maybe 2.. 2 1/2 inches max. Currently I have a flightstick type 'thing' I got from good will for like $1. I drilled a 3" whole in the bottom to fit it over my trackball when playing games that use this type of stick. It is so sensitive that it moves around almost by itself. I am looking for a good tron style stick that I can drill the 3" whole on the bottom. But it would need to be atleast 3/4" deep so my track ball wont hit the PCP and so forth. That 3/4" may be off a bit.. It's a 3" golden tee track ball mounted in 3/4" MDF. 3/4" seem about right though. That's what the current stick has and it's an almost snug fit..

So anyone have some ideas on tron style sticks what might work?

A real tron stick might help  with control...  but its a lot deeper obviously...

What i think you are talking about is a typical analog stick for pc's.  They have the springs in the center of the shaft... making it initailly hard to pop out of the center... yet too easy to get to the edges too quickly.

Its sorta like a gas pedal -vs- Brake pedal in a car.

To fix this... I hacked a good bodied analog stick and added a set of bike tires in an " X " shaped fashion.  This
makes it considerably harder to push the further you go outwards from the center...

(yet nicely enough is easy to move arround in the center so as not to mess up accuracy like the other sticks)

I specifically made this for the game "Sinistar"  and it works AWESOMELY!    However... it also works much better at ANY Analog stick in any game.  I now wish that all analogs were made this way...

I never tried it with digital controls... so if that is what your after... you might consider hacking a happs joystick or using a trigger topped stick that they also sell.. as both of those have shorter depths than a real tron stick.

I'm curious...

What exactly did you use to get the analog joystick to work with in your cabinet?

I'm debating on making a "dedicated" Sinistar MAME cab, but I'm not completely sure yet how to get the joystick connected with an I-Pac for MAME....

DaveB has a 49 way joystick interface in the works. I'd wait to see how it pans out before deciding on a Sinistar MAME project. http://dave.bit2000.com/ (http://dave.bit2000.com/)
