Title: Small tabletop cab help???
Post by: NiN^_^NiN on April 06, 2004, 09:26:45 pm
Hey guys i have just been mucking around with the idea of a small table top cab (seen some around somewere) and i wanted to ask your guys help

What i'v done is got a old 486 dx2 50 laptop with a 10" screen and 330mb hdd

I have pulled this sucker apart and the hdd has read problems :( but i fdisked it and only made 10mb available so i'v done this installed dos and put VANTAGE onto the laptop (VANTAGE is a classic arcade emu made to run full speed on 486 it has dkong invaders and galaga so im happy ;)) but the problem is after looking at a few post it looks like the laptop doesnt have a soundcard as it was a add-on  >:(

I still need to try out the sound but im sure it has no soundcard Grrrr

So what im wondering is do you know of any arcade games that use the PC speaker even if its 1 of the really old 1's and it uses beeps etc?

I dont think there is but id like some help if u guys know of anything.

its real hard to find a cheap 486 laptop they still cost alot than they should down here :(

I'll take some pics tonight for you guys 2 see :) it looks quite cool i think :D i love playing frogger on it  :-[

I think your best bet is to find that add-on???  Also, check the vantage.cfg file for sound options available to you.

Nah i can't find the addon anywere there isnt much info around for that laptop either

the only sound options are
    0 (Silence)
    1 (Sound Blaster)
    2 (Sound Blaster AWE32)
    3 (Pro Audio Spectrum)
    4 (Ultrasound Max (CS4231 Codec))
    5 (Ultrasound)
    6 (Windows Sound System)
    7 (Ensoniq Soundscape)

so no option for pc speaker :( but i dont think there are any emu's that use 1

What would be really neat is if you could interface that lcd panel with a regular computer--someone posted a link awhile back on the pinouts for lcd displays--might be a fun project--that way you could get the benefit of the lcd while having sound support, larger HD, etc.  wish i could remember that link for you.

Can't you play without sound and just listen to the voices in your head?  Works for me.

Another option...use the laptop to build your tabletop cab, then sell it on ebay, use the proceeds to buy a laptop with sound and work from there.  Just a thought.
