i'm getting to the point where i'm going to be wiring up the speakers in my new cab
(here's my cabs progress) http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=10;action=display;threadid=17849
and i'm probably going to go for 4 speakers as well as a base bin, i know most games "back in the day" were mono but i'm trying to future proof my cab. i intend to be running some pc games, mp3 software and maybe a psx emulator.
just curious about what's the most common sound setup
thanks

I have a 4.1 setup. Two speakers on the top (below the marquee) and two speakers on the back corners of the cab (near the base). They are meant to sound as dissipated surround... The sub is inside the cab of course :)

well i asked this question a few months back, and the general opinion was that 2 speakers were plenty. the volume level will be fine with 2 speakers and im making a showcase cab! its up to you though, as to how loud you want it, cuz no games that im aware of (mame) use surround sound.

Two, and they're tiny (maybe 2x3) computer speakers. Plenty of sound for MAME.

I went with 3 speakers (2.1). I wanted that extra bass for explosions and such. Remember in "Star Castle" when you would blow up the center ship and the cab would practically shake (at least that is how I remember it).

I have a 2.1, but it's one of those lousy CA speaker systems. I chose it because the sub would fit under the coin vault (barely), but I still can hardly hear or feel it...

A lot of my games have one speaker.
Several have two.
Turbo has 3.
My Star Wars has either 4, or possibly 6.

I have Creative T2900 2.1 speakers. They produce more than enough quality sound. They also have an external volume/bass control:

which is icing on the cake. 8)

2 3" pc speakers that came free with a 9600 baud mac modem. :)

i have 4 speakers and a subwoofer, they blast out some nice sound and they were only like 40$ on pricewatch.com I love blasting a good fighting game or metal slug 3 and getting into it. also when i work on my car in the garage i use my machine as a jukebox too

I like a good sound system (sometimes sub) for consoles but for my cab just a stereo setup, no sub. Sounds just perfect for the stuff I wanna play...
-
I am using the two speakers that came with the cabinet for right now. It is more than powerfull enough for mame and any games like that, but for mp3's or pc games a sub and more speakers would be a nice addition.

I have a 2.1 on my cab...
2 speakers and a subwoofer...

Like you, I'm gonna use it to play MP3's too. So I would like to mount more speakers than 2. At least, I really doubt 2 speakers will be enough for listening to some music. I'm wondering where the speakers should go though.
Form some proper audio freaks you should check out the Sound Mamey winners (http://www.mameworld.net/massive/Awards/Sound/body_sound.html)

I used the 4.1 surround speakers too. I use the machine for a jukebox too. I had to cut holes in the bottom with speaker grills. I put the sub in the back with a hole cut.
Sounds great. The Sub makes for nice explosions!

I have 6 in my cab my sound system is the Z-680 5.1 THX Speaker System from Logitech.
I have 2 above the monitor
2 in the back door
The center speaker mounted inside the back of it.
The sub mounted in the bottom of the cab.
I have this system for mp3's and I have to tell you that sound system has an amazing sound to it. The bass is incredible.
