I was looking at the MS Sidewinder and Logitech Wingman USB steering wheel/pedal sets and am wondering if anyone who has one can tell me how they work with Mame?
Also, can you use the pedals only, for instance if I wanted to interface the pedals with my 360 wheel?
Thanks.

See these threads on the Wingman, I just ordered one myself. I've heard the sidewinder works well also:

Regarding the pedals - yes and no - you definitely could use the pedals with a 360-degree wheel, but - - - the pedals don't have a separate USB connection so you have to plug the pedals into the 270 wheel, the 270 and 360 wheels into the PC and then only use the 360. Patrickl and others have used these pedals which are standalone USB and also multiple axis (which most MAME and serious PC games want) - http://www.act-labs.com/Products/pedal.htm

I havnt had a problem with mine.
1) You lose the "arcade" feel of the wheel
2) You will have alot of tweaking of the sensitivity of each driving game.
There are a few games that I cant get it to work on. The game thinks the wheel is spinning to the left for some reason. I will post that question later.
Hope this helps. Later on down the line I will probably build my own with a Pole Positon wheel off of ebay or something. Who knows.

Chris,
First off, there are two types of wheels in MAME - Pole Position and Sprint, etc. use a 360 wheel, which is basically a spinner with a bigger knob. Outrun, Cruisin' USA, Hot Chase, etc. use a 270 wheel with a pot which is what the PC steering wheels will work with. Either one could be used with the wrong wheel (with various degrees of success)

Shouldn't if you have the right wheel for the type of game, except like the shaker motor in outrun which could maybe be fixed if MAME ever adds force feedback.
2) You will have alot of tweaking of the sensitivity of each driving game.
Yes, I would expect this.

This sounds like a calibration problem. Many arcade games had a calibration menu for setting up the wheel. Try turning the Setup (or similar DIP switch ON in MAME (Tab - Dip Switches)) and then use (Usually F2) to look for a calibration menu.

Not to resurrect a dead problem, but the steering wheel conundrum seems to be ongoing. What wheel are most people using for 270 degree games and what games exactly support that? I'm an outrun, Chase HQ sorta guy myself and I'd love to play them and any others I could make happen relatively easily...

A great way to start is to do a deluxe search at MAWS (http://www.mameworld.net/maws/) for control "Paddle" and genre "Driving".
The problem is the couple shooter driving games (spyhunter) are missed, plus a few other games since MAWS hasn't yet updated to the multiple inputs recently added. :-\
