Title: DOS mame with mamewah
Post by: Truz on March 26, 2004, 01:51:17 pm
hello i am having problems with configuring dos command line mame with mamewah. The reason i am using dos version instead of windows is because windos version was causing problesm for me that the dos version somehow fixed (see thread on main forum). The syste, i am running is  a p4 1.3ghz with windows millenium.

So heres my problem. I set all the directories in mamewah correctly that i got it to display all my games. The problem i am having is with the show dos box option.

If i set it to 2 the games wont load at all and mamewah freezes on the loading box for the game. If i set it to 1 i get the dos box and it loads the game perfectly. But then the dos box is there and makes it look ugly and causes problems when exiting back to mamewah becasue the dos box is still there and it has to be closed out.

What do you think the problem is here. I thought that the show dos box option was supposed to be set to 2, but that is causing problems for me. How do i fix this?

Just my 2 cents : mamewah is for windows (in my opinion)
So either use mamewah + win98 or xp + mame win
or use arcadeos + dos....
Why did you ever install millenium ?

well this was my families old pc (hp pavilion) , that no one uses anymore and i can basically do whatever i want with it. That is why WinME is on this machine because it is what came with it and i figured i could live with it as it isnt really that bad... and didnt feel like spending money on xp. But i do have an xp cd that came with my recently acquired ibuypower.com pc that i ordered, i cant use that to install xp on my other pc can i. Doesnt it have some sort of protection where it can only be installed on one pc.

Also i am using Dos command line mame because it solved a problem i was having within other windows versions of mame. You can read about that here

i don't have an x arcade, but a custum buiilt cp with ipac.
Dont't know which encoder is in an x arcade.
I read the posts you mentioned, but no-one talks about your os.
Since you don't have the problem in dos, your pc hardware is good (normally).
Try getting a version of win98se and try then.
My best guess.

I don't think it's a bios prob.  Bios normally beeps at startup if there are problems.
Your system is fast enough, so normally keyboard buffer underrun shouldn't happen, unless you have a crappy os.

Just my gut thoughts,

yea well this is Windows Millenium (crappiest of all MS OS) so maybe that is the prob. I would like to get xp on this computer but i really cant justify spending the money on xp just so i can have it on my computer that is basically just used for mame.

Since you are using DOS MAME you *must* have Show DOS Box set to 1 (the Auto-Show option is there purely for WinMAME).

Basically you are stuck with the ugly-ness of the DOS Box, but you can make it close: right click on your mame.exe, and pick Properties.  Somewhere in those properties is an option to 'Close on Exit' - just tick that option and you should be all set :)
