does anyone know of the ideal settings in mame to replicate the feel of orginal spinners?
to be less vague i was wondering if anyone has the speed and sensitivity settings that closest replicate spinner based games. without having a arkaniod or say tempest game in my basement im at a loss and flying blind when tweaking these.

I think this is a tricky one...
Firstly some spinners (eg Arkanoid) used gears or similar, rather than a direct method such as the Tornado, so getting the same feel will be difficult.
Also, depending what mouse driver, optics, optic wheel etc. you are using I would expect this to affect the analog sensitivity settings - ie other peoples settings might not be right for you.
I don't know but I expect most people just have a guess at this - I have only played 1 arcade spinner game (Tempest), so I have no idea how they 'really' felt, I just set them how I feel is right :)
BTW I seem to recall Oscar had some settings with the instructions of some spinners (probably online) - could be worth a look for a starting point...

I knew when I posted that question there would be grey area. Each spinner is different so my question is specific to the SlikStik spinner. It seems to me I'm tweaking speed down and sensitivity WAY up (150+) to make the games feel right.
Just looking for that shot in the dark person on here that has a working original and a slikstik on mame to throw in their 2 cents.

I have a Tornado spinner too, but i just got it mounted on the CP so I haven't had a chance to play it a lot yet. I think MinWah is correct though, you just have to fiddle with the settings until you get it where you like it on each game. Happily for me it seems to work great right out of the box in Tempest, which is the number one reason why I bought a spinner. Arkanoid I haven't been able to get right yet. I'm getting close on Omega Race, but I still haven't gotten it 100%.

I thought it was way to slow on tempest until i ramped up the sensitivty quite a bit. I suppose it really is just preference at the end of the day.

This probably goes back to what Minwah said about drivers, etc. I'm running a Mac with OS 9 and the built in mouse drivers. I expect performance would be quite different if you're using a different OS with different drivers.

Just make sure you turn off mouse acceleration - this can affect some games quite badly I believe.
Apart from that I do recall I had to up the sensitivity a lot for most games with my old Oscar Model 1...

by acceleration are you referring to the speed setting in mame (which i cranked down and that helped alot) or acc. under windows itself?
-
IMHO, A spinner should always be adjusted so that there is a mechanical correlation to the on-screen action.
In other words, in a game like Tempest, one revolution of the spinner should equal one trip around the "tube" (roughly).
In a game like Breakout, you should be able to get from one side of the screen to the other with a little less than half a turn.
And so on.
I think if you stick to this rule, you can't go wrong, but it'll take some experimentation to get there based on the spinner you are using.

Windows itself.
