Title: Poor Man's Mame
Post by: SkateDetroit on March 21, 2004, 01:21:15 pm
Here is my first attempt at a MAME cab. For the amount of money I spent I am entirely happy with how it came out. The family loves playing Donkey Kong and the rest of the classics. Gives me a good laugh everytime I hear a BLEEP or BLOOP coming from the other side of the house.

Thanks to 'Delta8t8' and everyone else for giving me good direction. Thanks to everyone that posts their projects here. Really gave me a good idea of what I wanted, and I tried to make that as best I could within my budget.

I've still to put a marquee on it, but I'm undeiceded on what it will be.

I'm already working on my next cab. A big ole' 33 Inch podium monster. Click the link to go to my website and click the MAME link from there to see a few construction photos and comments.

Thanks guys!!!

Awesome looking cab! What was the cab orginally? Keep the 4 button layout, that what is going to work best with your verticle monitor.

It was a generic 'Rock Ola' style cab. Specifically, I think it was the game 'Eyes'. I had hoped to keep original art on the cab, but only one side had it and it was pretty beat up. I.E. scratched and such.

The first setup was horizontal, but this cab was just made to play the vertical games.

               Thanks for the kind words!

In anticipation of getting my marquee made up I opened up Photoshop and "added" one. I think this is the design i'm going to order, but still undecieded. I've had thoughts of getting a custom one done. Kinkos quoted me 15 dollars for some super special backlit stuff. Any one have an opinion on that material?

Thanks again for your awesome comments! Thanks Minwah for making my new favorite program ;)

I've seen the threads about getting MameWah to go vertical, and i'm curious if theres any plans to ever add that function built in?

Yes I've used that on two cabs I think it looks really good, but on my last cab they marked my marquee so they printed me another one for free.

I put the marked one behind the new one and that looks even better!

Amazing how much difference the addition of a Marquee can make. Nice looking cab.

I can't get over how much I like your cab, by the way thanks for the measurements! A marquee that I think would look awesome on your cab is the marquee used by Alank2 on his project. I think he bought it from arcadeshop.com and its called "Multicade" and shows a bunch of cool classic vert games icons. I had my printing done by Mamemarquees.com and could not have been happier the guy that runs that is great and provides AWESOME service and I think his prices are the same as you would find at Kinkos but with better quality.

Glad you like it :)

I don't know if I will ever manage native rotation - I looked into it years ago and decided not.  But I have had a couple of pointers since that I need to look into - one day maybe...

Is the coin door from an old pinball machine? That is the only place I have seen a chrome one. But, what do I know. I don't get out much. I personally like that style coin door though. It really looks cool on that cab. Nice job.

Minwah - 'Where theres a will theres a way' 'If you build it, we will rotate it...' And other such nonsense  ;) How old is Mamewah?

J_K_M_A_N - It actually came off of a game called 'GPI', but I believe possibly it could of been used on pinball machines? It definetely is in that style. Theres so much black on my cab I don't think you'd be able to tell what it is if it had a black coin door also! It definetely gives it a classic feel and I dig that. Thanks for checking it out and the kind words.

They are the classic Wico leaf style joysticks. I love them! If you're doing a classic cab I definetely reccomend them. The joysticks and the buttons are wired up to two USB game pads. FYI - Best Buy has some for $9.99 that have something like 16 or 17 buttons. Working great so far.

Very clean look...gotta love that. Nice to see a good looking cab without 2 trackballs, a spinner, and 5 joysticks. Just sweet!  ;D

That's really nice.  If mine comes out half as well, I'd be happy.

Thanks Mar and Spaced!

Here are some updated pictures. I was at my buddys house tonight and saw that he had a Rock Ola marquee hanging on his wall. I got all giddy like a school girl! Got it home and put it on the cab and it looks awesome! Really sets the cab off. Thanks Ed!

LOL, about 2.5 years old now :)

I like your new marquee - looks more suitable than your MAME one if I may say so  ;)

Now that you are done with the cab (yea right!)  maybe you could give some attention to your poor fish? :'(  St. Patrick's Day is long past so they probably would appreciate you getting rid of the green water. ;)

j.k.

Great looking cab!  Nice Job!

LOL They're four year old goldfish and they like a challenge! Every third monday I pour a bag of Pirannahs in the tank to give them excercise.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! Yeah my cab will never be done. I need some side art! But I have no idea what to use if I keep with the Rock Ola theme. The original Rock Ola side art, or that is what was left of it wasn't very appealing.
