Just a little argument I'm having with my girlfreind. I've been drinking out of baby bottles for the past few days because she wont wash any glasses. She says "just drink out of the bottle" "it won't go flat." I say "it goes flat, I hate flat soda."
As long as she's still washing bottles I'll still have something to drink out of... :P
[edit]Edited poll. Too many optons.[/edit]

I said no. Unless you mean you open the bottle and then leave it lying around for hours before drinking it...
We tend to have cans more in England, but same principal I suppose - I drink straight out of the can or bottle usually.
I actually prefer flat Coca-Cola & Lemonade. I even sometimes shake up the big bottles and then gradually unscrew the cap a few times to make it flat. Fizzy it just fills you full of gas - handy for impressive belches tho I suppose ;)
Edit: thought I'd add that even tho I do it, I heard you shouldn't drink straight out of cans/bottles due to the fact that you can catch viles (spelling?) disease. Basically rats piss on the crates when they're stored in factories - pretty grim really :P
-
No, it doesn't make it flat if you drink out of the bottle. But the action of moving the bottle around shakes it up and thus releases more gas each time you pick it up to take a drink.
-
I voted no, though I don't think that pointing out to her "look honey - the whole world thinks you are nuts!" will get you anywhere!
Take it from an old (38) married guy. Just get paper cups and let it die.
:)

Drinking out of baby bottles? Get your butt into the kitchen, and wash some dishes.
Oh, and I voted 'no.'
-

I never thought of myself as a sexist, but this hadn't occured to me. Shame on me!
:-[
-
Yes it does make it go flat, the saliva and food particles transferred to the bottle create more sites within the bottle that bubbles can form around and release more CO2 so your answer is yes. Sorry guys.

Not a chance in hell! I don't do dishes... EVER! Call me sexist all you want, but if I were gay, my significant other would be doing the dishes.
-
Quite the opposite actually. If you pour the soda into a glass, that will release more air, and it will go flat faster. It's the same reason you pour a beer out of the bottle into a glass. To release some of the air.
-
So, like....what if you didn't have a significant other? Would you just let them pile up, or switch to disposable?
I ask because your stance seems so ridiculous. It's just something that has to be done, and it sounds to me like you have dirty dishes that have been sitting in the sink for a very long time. Why don't you just get a soap dispensing sponge and just wash the dishes you use as soon as you finish with them? Get a glass of soda, drink it, and when you take the time to walk all the way back to the kitchen, instead of just setting it down, take 10 seconds and wash it.

Why? What's the big deal? I actually like doing the dishes.
-
didja hear that? Peale likes to do the dishes.
That's the solution to your problem. Pack the dirty stuff up in a box, send it off to Vermont or wherever Peale's from, and make sure to include postage so he can send them back when they are done.
VIOLA! Clean dishes!
"excuse me sir, how do you get your dishes so clean?!"
"I use the PealeScrubber 2000TM. It's GREAT!"
-
Sure, I'll do it, as long as he pays postage both ways.
-
I thought you meant a 2 liter... So I voted yes. The longer you leave a 2-liter open, the more fizz you lose.
Besides, drinking directly from a 2 liter is just plain gross.
-
Yes, I am reffering to a two liter bottle.
As for what I'd do if I lived on my own... everything would be disposable. Tv dinners, canned soda etc.
-
dont buy 2 liters then. just buy canned sodas so you dont need to use a glass.
or hire a maid to do your dishes. i bet you could even get a kid in the neighborhood to come do your dishes for $5 or something. kids needs the extra cash to buy candy, play video games or do crack. :'(

I seriously laughed so hard at this I was afraid I'd wake the family across the house.
I don't drink much soda, but when I do I never buy a 2 liter bottle, because by the time I'm done with it, it's flat....like that girl on wil and grace.

ok wow that's just sad. lol...
You can call doing dishes "Gay", "A Woman's Job", "etc",...... it's pure and utter laziness if you don't do them yourself. And it takes LESS time to wash a glass than it does to get it out of the cabinet, pour soda, and wait for the fizz to go down.. You don't have to scour it. Turn on the water, take a sponge, run it over the inside and out, CLEAN!! not hard.. Same with dinner dishes and pots/pans: Hint: If right after you're done eating on them/cooking with them, you run some water over them and wipe them with a sponge, it'll take literally 0.000000000000000005 seconds. If you let them sit, it'll take forever.
Just my $0.02

I think my problem with his situation is that he's drinking from baby bottles. Which likely means there's a baby. She's cleaning them for the baby, and he's drinking from them.
-
Yeah...maybe this isn't important to you, but at one point she will tire of the entitlement attitude (mixed with an extremely unhealthy dose of lazy-ass) and leave you, with the kid (don't even know if it's yours, but...). If she doesn't, she should.
-
Many plastics are not air tight. For instance pop from a 2 liter bottle will go flat over time because the plastic lets air in and out. Slowly, but it happens. I suspect baby bottles are made from the same stuff.
Personally, I don't allow myself to own more than 4 glasses because when they all get dirty I HAVE to do dishes, and while I'm at it I also a sink full, getting rid of the pile...
I agree you should be doing dishes. However you should also stop drinking soda. You can get water from the tap, and it won't rot your teeth. Get a good filter if you can't stand the taste.
-
Uhm, I have to agree with a few of the others here. If you've got a baby in the house and you refuse to help out with the housework by even doing a few dishes, then you deserve to be drinking flat soda. :-\

Theoretically, drinking out of the bottle will indeed make the soda go flat faster.
Don't ask me why, but for a brief time I was very interested in the process of carbonation and managed to learn a couple of things.
The absolute most important thing to a carbonated beverage is temperature. The mere act of holding the bottle in your presumably 98.6 degree hand and placing your equally warm lips to the liquid will cause more of the gas to be released than if you were just pouring some in a glass. You would also probably breath some heated air into the bottle while you are drinking, and this wouldn't help either.
Add all of this to the fact that you would be constantly moving the beverage in and out of the fridge, agitating, capping, uncapping, etc....
(as if anyone really cared ;))

To all those who have criticized the way I run my household... $(#& OFF! I wouldn't dare comment on how you do things in your place of residence and I don't expect any of you to either. There are just some things that you should keep your opinions to yourself about, and this, I believe, is one of those things.
Granted, I did put myself out in the open here, but I wasn't looking for feedback on my methods, just on whether or not soda goes flat under certain circumstances.
And further more this is the way things will be as long as I'm arround and if anyone has a problem with it they can leave, including but not limited to the woman and the child (when she's old enough).

Buck up little camper; if you think it's bad taking a little heat for refusing to do the dishes, just think how much it sucks to be the person living with you ;)
It's a public forum -- next time don't give us information that you don't feel is game for discussion.

Maybe you've had enough caffeine for today? Try juice out of the bottle instead, might be good for those frayed nerves.
