Hello,
I am interested in a barebone computer with at least 800mhz maybe even over 1GB depending on price. :) I have video, sound, lan, modem, harddrive, cd rom, cd burner and even the tower. I think all I need is the motherboard with the processor installed, and memory (RAM). I have a licensed version of Win98 that I would install but I need the motherboard drivers, etc. I even have an extra tower. Do you have anything that would suit these needs? I don't have much money to put into a system so used would be the best route.
The only thing that will be running is win98 and mamewah with the emulators such as mame, nes, etc.
Thanks,
Mark

Forgot to mention I'll pay via PAYPAL!! I am located in Edmonton, AB.

Check out the "building my first cab" post in the main forum.
About halfway down the post the guy lists the equipment he found on tigerdirect (an Athalon 2400+, mobo, 256MB DDR, and a CPU fan) for $99. Looks like a pretty decent deal to me.
-
That sounds pretty good! What I have now is a PentiumII 300Mhz, 64mb ram but it has trouble running games that aren't from the 1980s. lol
I'd like to run newer games as well.
Thanks,
Mark

Smells like this (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=713503&Sku=S450-2035%20C&CatId=1230).

Sure looks like it.
Can't remember what Mobo came with it and nobody mentioned the rebate part, but it still looks like a good overall deal.
In fact, I may have to look into one of these for m next project.
-
Hmmm I still think I'd rather go used. I only have $100US total
-
I'd definately look at your local computer stores and recyclers, in that case.
Usually you can find decent deals in the classifieds, too.
-
I wouldn't buy from tigerdirect with someone else's money, let alone mine. They have terrible support, and I've heard some horror stories. No thank you.
-
Haha nice avatar pic on the side -- office space!! :D
Yeah i looked up a few things about tigerdirect and they all point to NO GOOD. lol. I want a used system anyways since im just running mame.
ANYONE HAVE ANY USED COMPUTERS?????
-
I am regularly able to find sub-$100 pc systems local on ebay. (Local, then you can pick them up). Can usually get a 700 mhz system or so.

Don't believe all that you've heard.
I've placed three orders so far through Tigerdirect.ca, and have had nothing but good transactions.
They ship free over $200.00 (although it used to be $100.00)
I've just recently received a refurb 19" Princeton monitor through Tiger, and it was free shipping. Sweet. (The thing weighs a friggin' ton......)
Tigerdirect has good deals on mobo / cpu combos......
DISCLAIMER: No, I do not work for Tigerdirect, nor does anyone that I know. In receommending their services, there is no personal gain for myself, or anyone in my family.
-
Ditto - I have gotten some really good deals at Tiger, and only had a minor issue that they cleared up quickly.
-
What Tigerdirect.ca causing problems?? I for one have used them a few times and had great service. I got the tip from my works IT dept.

This may be a stupid question, but it's been a while since I've purchased a system...
On these motherboards with "on-board" audio & video (like the one from the link) can you, for example, upgrade the video card via the APG slot? Does a card cancel out the onboard chip? Does it lead to conflicts?
Finally, would it work the same way for sound?
Thanks,
mrC

If there is an AGP slot then you could simply add a new video card and disable the built in video card in your system configuration. Same for sound, my video and sound is all built in but I use a different video card and soundcard than the one from the motherboard. I just dissable it in its properties and have no conflicts. :)

I was thinking of picking it up, but it's not really a need right now.

Would that system run pretty much all MAME games? I'm looking for something to run all the MAME games from the classics to the new ones.
:) thanks
