hi all,
i'm in the process of building my first mame cabinet and have pretty much
got everything sorted, apart from the woodwork ;)
the pc i have is only a 600mhz p2 and i have been running mame0.79
with the0.79 rom set. i heard mention that if i run an older version
of mame (say 0.60) i may get quite a bit of performance increase on the ancient
pc. if this is so, will my 0.79 roms work with 0.60? if not, can i somehow convert
them back?
sorry if this is in some faq somewhere i've been pondering about it for the last week
and couldn't find any reference using the search button.
many thanks in advance

some games will work (because they have not been updated) with your older version. But alot will not. You need to get CLRMAME to audit it to the version you want to use and you may need to find those that are missing. Sometimes you can find this in ABEM and they it ROLLBACK. Means rolling back to older version of MAME. Sys24.com use to have fixromsets but its are temporary offline.
If you are thinking of running alot on that machine, you won't be able to do much with it. Save yourself the headaces of searching/fixing and just get a 1.5-1.9 ghz and the current version should run 90% of all the games listed.
