Title: Smashtv Recommendation
Post by: Tycoonbrad on March 14, 2004, 10:26:39 pm
I'm putting togther a control panel for SmashTV/Total Carnage.  All of my friends are VERY gungho about having two simultaneous players while playing those games.

Question: What joystick recommndations would you have for playing SmashTV?

Happ Super? P360? Competition, Wico Leaf Repo?  Etc...

I'm sure they'll also want to play Robotron, but right now I'd like to focus on Smashtv/Total Carnage.

Classic Wico Leaf for those specific games.

Once you decide on the joysticks you want to use, you may want to check out this thread on control panel design...

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=16720 (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=16720)

I'm trying to design a panel layout that will allow me to play Smash TV and Total Carnage in all their glory while still being able to play fighting games like SF2 & MK3 as well as most of the classic arcade games.

In my opinion, it really comes down to two layouts:

1324 and 3142  (see thread link above for pictures)

1324 is probably the most flexible all-around layout however the joysticks are a bit farther apart than a real Smash TV machine.

3142 can be set up with exactly the same joystick spacing as Smash TV, and the player 3 and 4 buttons are probably arranged better for a 4 player game.  The main problem is that player 2 is kind of off to the side when playing fighting games.  Though balance that against the fact that player one is more centered when playing one player games.

OR, simply ditch the entire 4-player concept and just have a joystick on each side of the button bank, and your problems will be solved.

I know the leafs are a little more authentic (but didn't total carnage have bats instead of ball tops?  remember back here).

BUT

crazy climber and karate fighter where BOTH dual 4ways.

you might consider (if you can afford it) to do 2 TSticksPlus's (www.ultramarc.com).  This will allow you to play the other 1/2 of the dual games with the original controls.  (I notice a difference in crazy climber myself).  But take note.  Thats 100bucks in joysticks ALONE!  (60 if you don't care if you have to get under the control panel to switch).  Anyway, I've only heard GREAT things about them.

Crazy Climber uses dual 8-ways.

Assault and Karate Champ are the two games that I know NEED dual 4-ways.

You might also consider whether you need fire buttons on top of the sticks for tank games and such.

So far, I have a vote for the original Wico Leafs and the T-stik plus.  Since the original Wico's are a little hard to come by, I might mark them off the list.

Anyone else?

Get the T-Slik Plus and do the following:
J - T-Slik plus
