Title: At wits end with Clrmame
Post by: Oldskool on March 14, 2004, 12:53:05 pm

Ugh...

I'd like to update my Galaga roms to work with nonamemame Mame .80.  (Note: My galaga rom set works wonderfully with older Mame builds)

The included roms in that zip are :
1d, 1c, 5c, 5n, 2n, 04d_g06, 07m_g08, 04e_go5, 04K_g02, 04h_g04, 04m_g01, 07h_g09, 07e_g10, and 04j_g03

I know that as of .79, the roms have changed, so I've been trying to use Clrmame (and romcenter) to no avail.

I ran nonamemame .80 from a command prompt, and found that that the following roms were not found:
gg1-1b.3p, gg1-2b.3m, gg1-3.2m, gg1-4b.2l, gg1-5b.3f,
gg1-7b.2c, gg1-9.41, gg1-11.4d, gg1-10.4f, prom-5.5n,  prom-4.2n, prom-3.1c, prom-1.1d, prom-2.5c.

I put a copy of the original galaga.zip rom set into a temp directory, and I extracted the filelist.dat from nonamemamexp .80

Using clrmame, I scanned galaga.zip with it set to autofix. When prompted to rename files, I clicked on "yes".

When Clrmame was finished, the report said that the wrongly named roms were corrected. I then had a look at the galaga.zip file and it still did not contain the files required by Mame. Some files were added to the zip, but they were the wrong ones.

I'm losing it......

Someone else will surely correct me if I am wrong, but I believe ClrMame only has the ability to correct older roms, and that with new ones you need to download the new binaries for it...

That's what I have, older roms, and the newest Mame.

For what it's worth, I made a backup of all of my roms, and scanned them through Romcenter.

Again, Galaga seems as though it cannot be repaired. I hit the "fix"  button, and when the dust cleared, it reported:

gg1-1b.3p     OK
gg1-2b.3m     OK
gg1-3.2m     OK
gg1-4b.2l     OK
gg1-5b.3f     OK
gg1-7b.2c     MISSING
gg1-9.41      OK
gg1-11.4d    OK
gg1-10.4f     OK
prom-5.5n    OK
prom-4.2n    MISSING
prom-3.1c     MISSING
prom-1.1d    OK
prom-2.5c     OK

We're getting closer, but still not there......

HELP !

yeah, clrmame can't create rom files.  It can move them, rename them as needed, etc.  But if it is a new dump with new binaried clrmame can't produce that.  If it could you wouldn't need to download rom files, just have clrmame conjure them up.

just think of it like:
Clrmame is a FILE MANAGER
but if you don't have the FILES, Clrmame can't make one up for you. You have to get the files.

I didn't realize that it was a NEW dump that was required. I thought it was a file rename / checksum / whatever.....

Ugh.

IIRC, Galaga didn't get a redump.  Just changed the files around a bit.

Are you trying to do a rebuild, or just a fix?

I'm just trying to get the d*mn thing (Galaga) to work in Mame .80

Nuthin fancy........

As mentioned, I managed to get so far, but can't seem to get the following roms:

gg1-7b.2c    MISSING
prom-4.2n    MISSING
prom-3.1c    MISSING

Is this just a simple renaming that I have to do?

If this thread is crossing the line when it comes to forum rules, can someone please send me a PM instead of replying.

Thanks.

Asking for the ROM would be crossing the line, asking how to fix it is not.

Anyway, I assume you've created the .datfile from the mame.exe with 'mame -listinfo > mame80.dat' correct?

Then you tell ClrMAME where to find said .dat file, correct?

Then you go to 'Settings' and tell ClrMAME where to find the ROM in question, correct?

Back out, and go to 'Scan' make sure that all the 'Fix' checkboxes are checked, and then click 'Scan' to unleash hell.

There are reasons NOT to update your mame on a regular bases...  One is you get it working and things stop..

but..

Trying to find roms AFTER a few revisions is a PAIN!  So it goes back and forth.

I personally think as soon as you max out what your computer can do... it's usually a good time to stop with the new versions.  The last 5 or 6 versions of mame I don't think there have been much I could play that where new.   (strike that... there was a REALLY fun vertical shooter recently don't remember the name...)

Learn to use the newsgroups for more information.  If you have access... search for groups with emulation in them... you will find places to find answers to your questions.

I've since found out that binary newsgroups can be a wonderful thing.  ;)

*shakes a paw angrily at Comcast* DAMN YOU!

Anyone know of a way to access newsgroups if your ISP sucks?

I have seen others ask this on alt.games, mame, there are straight newsgroup services that charge a monthly fee for all newsgroup access, in the $10 range or so....

Any way of getting newsgroups without paying?

Not as far as I know.  I used to have full access, switched ISP's and now have limited access!

My ISP offers their own news server.  Does Comcast have that limited option for you? (*edit* yes they do)
*edit*
Comcast - netnews.comcast.net
Comcast - news.comcast.giganews.com
Try both of 'em?

I got it figured out, I had to register with Giganews, but I get one free gig per month.

When i first started with MAMe and was trying to figure out clrmame, i thought that's what it did too. The instructions use ambiguous words to the unlearned newbie.
