My head almost exploded today trying to figure out what all the derivative versions of MAME do. Is there a list anywhere that compares features and/or explains what all these different versions do?
If not, why don't we start a comprehensive list here. Feel free to fill in descriptions and add version names. This is all I can think of for now.
MAME (Command-line/Version, etc.)
PacMAME
MisfitMAME
Analog+ Mame
AdvanceMAME
No Name Mame
Fast Mame
It may also be helpful to have a comparison list of Front-ends, since they add/subtract features from the Mame experience itself, again, if it doesn't already exist.
(Also, note to developers: please include either a FAQ or brief description/feature list of your software on your site. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to quickly figure out what your software does, and how many sites neglect to do this)

MiSFiT MAME contains PacMAME. No Name MAME contains MiSFiT MAME, most of PacMAME, MameAnalog+, and a bunch of others. I hope that helps a bit.

I know, I know, I'm getting to it.

Another interesting one is smoothmame.
discontinued (source isn't, just the compiled code). It trys to make all 58fps games run at 60.. And he does it without messing up the sound (but the game runs a little faster). Good for some people.

yeah why did smoothmame stop making binarys? if hes still making source isnt it just one more step to release the normal version for compliling illiterate people

I'm pretty sure he said he couldn't handle the bandwidth. It was getting really really expensive.
After mame stopped distributing the binaries for all of the .uX releases... all of the other builds started getting hammered.

i think they should just not release any of the U releases, just wait till they get a new full version, who really HAS to have the tiny update that a U1 adds really.....

I like Mame32Fx and Mameplus because they have command.dat support. The command.dat displays the move lists for games like street fighter. I like this because I don't have to look up the moves on gamefaqs all of the time...

I'd like to point out that the latest version of No Name MAME has command.dat support as well.

AWESOME. I have been waiting for that...I'd much rather use no name than the ones that I enumerated. Thanks GatesOfBill.

No problem. You guys should really contact me if No Name MAME doesn't do something that you'd like it to.

I'd like it to install itself with no input from me, find all the roms, download any updates, update itSELF, start my favorite game upone startup...hmm....read my mind, make me breakfast, tuck me in at night, and provide me a decent salary while I stay home playing games all day.
What's the turnaround time on these features I'll need?
;D ;) ;D

For a list of pretty much everything current, check the sidebars at mameworld.net
There are links to all of the above builds(i think), the current versions, rom, sample, artwork etc stats & links.
Theres also a list of a bunch of the front ends, although it seems that its not updated that often, lot of dead links and obsolete stuff- but its worht a look

find all the roms, download any updates
Possible, yet unlikely because of legal reasons.

Maybe I'll look into these. I don't think they would be that hard.

Heh, yea right.
