I know this type of question has been asked about 100 times, but I think I have a different angle. I built a 2 player, 6 button each (3.x2 arrangement) panel with TB in center. I want to rebuild my first "prototype" cab and have many refinements planned. One is to cut down the width of the panel so it doesn't have "wings". It maybe crowded with 6 buttons each and TB in 24" (cab is 25.5" wide including thickness of side panels)
So, I am thinking, neither I or my wife ever, never, not once, play fighters. guess we are too old. have no deisre to play them, let alone spend time to learn the moves.
So then, why do I need 6 buttons each?
Only game I can think of we've played that needs more than 4 each is toobin, 5th button for "throw" but I can use joystick for that. Stargate, defender, asteriods are still playable with buttons from both players. Majong games don't count.
What am I missing if I go with 4 buttons each instead of 6?
Thanks,

It sounds like you won't be missing much. I only use all 6 for Capcom fighters and console games. Super Nintendo has 6 buttons (x,y,a,b,l,r). My dreamcast also needs 6 buttons.
If you have no interest in console games/emulators, then I'd go with four buttons.

If I was building a cab again and didnt play fighters I would prolly still have six buttons just for the simple fact that you dont really know what is coming out in the future. and If you are going to do all the work whats 2 more buttons per player. But since you are trying to save space on your CP to fit everything its pretty much your choice.

Have you thought of trying a different layout? I am building a CP that is only 23.75 inches wide, and I am having 2 joys with 6 buttons each AND a 3" trackball.
Redesign might be useful.

Stargate, defender, asteriods, and many other games like that are also playable with less buttons if you simply use the joystick too (I CAN'T play Stargate or Defender with an 8-way at all unless it is in the mode where the ship just goes wherever you point it).
