Title: Applying NOS CPO
Post by: Rocky on March 05, 2004, 11:34:52 am
I'm redoing a control panel and am ready to apply a Magmax NOS overlay.

I've had to trim the overlay down a bit to fit the control panel I'm using and I peeled the backing off the trim pieces. The adhesive seem good but not super strong. I spent about 5 hours with chemicals removing the old adhesive.

My CP is wood in a "U" shape with the top part having a sheet of metal that attaches to it (where the controls are). The wood is bare with no finish.

Anyone with experience doing this?  Should I add contact cement? Will the overlay stick to bare wood?

TIA,

Rocky

I just put in my order with mamemarquees.com and Scott told me to primer bear wood or MDF before applying the vinyle sticker for maximun adhesion. I guess wood by itself isn't a good medium to stick stuff to. By the way Scott's a great guy and easy to do bussiness with! Hope this helps

In general, the smoother the surface, the better the adhesion.

Primer is much better than bare wood because it fills in the porous spots in the wood, but I would recommend a sand and paint after priming, for best adhesion.

Don't paint with latex either.
Latex is rubbery, and will not stick as well as enamel.

If you use latex, you run the risk of the label sticking to the paint, but the paint coming off the primer.
