Title: wheels on the bottom of my showcase cab?
Post by: hulkster on March 04, 2004, 06:31:13 pm
okay, im getting close to assembling the base pedestal part for the control panel, and im going to be putting in the base piece of wood soon, and am wondering if i need to allow space for wheels.  i know ive heard that people get these locking wheels or something.  i dont want my cab to move at all (will be playing golden tee), so will these things lock real tight, and even if they are locked, will it scoot around on the wheels?  thanks in advance.

If you put swivel casters on all four corners, even when they're locked the cab can still wiggle around slightly.  Two swivel casters and two non swivel casters would wiggle less, and the cab maintains a full mobility. Two non swivel casters at the back and feet at the front should be rock solid, but you have to tip the cab over when you want to move it. Another alternative on corners with swivel casters is to use both them and feet. Roll the cab where you want it, and then screw down the feet to lock the cab in place.

How heavy is the CP pedestal?  If it's not too heavy then i wouldn't worry about castors for that part.  The monitor section I would due to the size and weight.

well im designing this cab so that it can come apart into 4 pieces.  cp, cp pedestal, monitor section, monitor pedestal.  so i may not even need wheels.

I'd agree that since it's going to come apart into four pieces it probably won't need wheels.

well... it may be easy to take off the CP... but you have to think about if you'll need to move the monitor... cos taking off the monitor is pain.....  so.... it might worth it to put some wheels on the monitor section....

I thought that the locking swivel castors wouldn't work too well because when you lock the wheel, the castor still swivels around.

Then I found these: http://www.leevalley.com/hardware/page.asp?page=40133&category=3,40888,41279&abspage=1&ccurrency=1&SID=

It says the following:
The most effective combination is two rigid-plate casters and two swivelling-plate casters with locking mechanisms. The locking model simultaneously brakes the wheel and locks the caster.

If it locks both the wheel AND the castor, wouldn't that be good??

(and by the way, those prices are canadian)
