Title: Connect Arkanoid spinner to ipac2
Post by: lexi1970 on September 22, 2023, 07:40:51 am
Hello

my name is Alex. I registered here because I have a small problem and can't find a solution.
I have an old Arkanoid Spinner. I would like to connect it to an ipac2.
But I don't know which pins of the four on the spinner are plus minus x1 and x2.
I think I have to connect it to the ipac at trackball? because the spinner connector has many more contacts.

hope you can help me.

It should be:

Data+
+5
Gnd
Data-

You can toy around, anyway: nothing will be damaged

Nothing will be damage if i change +5v and ground?

Should i connect it to spinner or trackball on the ipac?

I did some googeling and found this pic with wires.

black = ground
red = 5v
yellow = signal
green = signal

The diodes will be reverse-biased so the LEDs won't light up and the photodiodes won't switch.

The board won't work, but you aren't going to release the magic smoke that makes electronics work.   :lol

Shorting 5v and ground together is a different story.   :scared

Should i connect it to spinner or trackball on the ipac?
Either one works.
- If you think you might add a trackball, put the spinner on the spinner pins.
- If you think you might add a second spinner, put both on the trackball pins -- one spinner is on X-axis pins and the other is on the Y-axis pins.

Thank you very much. This helps me a lot.

hello

i can't get the spinner to work. the buttons and joysticks i have connected to the ipac 2 work fine.
but unfortunately my arkanoid spinner does not.
when i measure the board without the spinner at gnd and 5volts, i only have 0.8 volts there. is this normal?

best regards

Hello again

The 5 volt fit. My first multimeter has a defect. With another I could measure the 5volt. But no matter how I connect the spinner it is not recognized.
Do you think it works at all on the ipac 2?
If so then it must be defective.

I don't know those pac-things, but looking at online pictures of the interface, I think you should use the pinheaders intended for trackballs... are you?
Trackballs are  (dual) quadrature encoders, so compatibile with spinners (same base technology)

Thank you very much.
I have connected the spinner to the trackball connector on the Ipac2.

I have now measured something on the spinner.
I have 5 volts alternating at x1 or x2 on gnd.

this is what andi from ultimarc wrote to me.

"But the Arkanoid spinner might not be compatible. It needs to be a 2-channel quadrature design with active-low signal lines."

Do you think the spinner could not fit on the ipac?

I forgot that the Arkanoid spinner is an "active-high" device.   :embarassed:
- Active-high and active-low devices have different voltage ranges for logic high and logic low.

An Opti-PAC has the option to use active-high devices.

Using Active-High devices.
Almost all optical controls are active-low, which means the outputs are actively pulled to zero volts, or left "open", depending on the position of the optical spoked wheel.
If your device is "Active High", it will pull the outputs to 5 volts, or leave "open" depending on the wheel position.
The Opti-PAC can be configured to handle Acrive-High devices using a simple software utility. Just click on the check-boxes for the inputs you need to be set to active-high.

thank you.
I ordered an ultimarc spintrak yesterday.
