Title: I've made a nearly 3 hour Outrun Retrospective
Post by: MrThunderwing on October 27, 2022, 12:25:24 pm
I've made a nearly 3 hour long video all about Outrun, its home ports and sequels! I've even got a few very special guest contributors in for it!

I've only gotten the time to watch bits and pieces, but I really like what I see.   Now when people ask me an outrun question, I can just point them towards this video.   :)

ok, i've just finished watching it all. The kids never give me that long at a stint. But that was three hours? I don't believe you! I was enjoying myself the whole way through :)

One thing i noticed was the way to turn off the catch-up hadicap rubberbanding in the original OR2! It's in your screenshots of the LCD-mangled arcade cabs. You hold brake then shift up on the stick. Does this work in OR2SPSDX? I know the single-player-only code is the same. And i presume player only means no traffic?

And, because i'm on the topic, i wonder if disabling the handicap makes the cars different again. In singleplayer, the cars have different stats, but in multiplayer they all get neutered and are all the same. They look different, but that's it.

And you've made me remember i never got Xemu running. I'll want it in LAN anyway, so might wait to confirm when that's working :)

Well, spotted! I must admit I hadn't even looked at the footage that closely myself to notice that. I've never played SPDX in multiplayer, is there no option to turn the handicap off when you're initially selecting your cars and which courses you're going to race on? I know it was just like a simple on/off setting for PC LANS and Xbox System Link in C2C and also when playing online in Outrun Online Arcade on the PS3. I think the 'player only' bit just means you can disable the multiplayer for your game, if you didn't want someone else joining in. Edit: Actually, that doesn't make any sense as there already is the different single player only code.

Y'know, I've no idea if the Beta Chihiro version of Outrun 2 even supports multiplayer or If it does, if a link-up option is something the Xemu or CXBXR developers are even looking into.

That's interesting about the car stats changing in multiplayer for SPDX. I didn't think there was really a difference between the cars anyway in it, not compared to the OG Outrun 2, where you can really tell the difference in handling between the beginner, intermediate and professional cars.

P.S. Glad you enjoyed the vid!

I've released videos of the raw footage I took of the Outrun 2 Cabinet I discovered if anyone's interested in seeing the actual Chihiro game in action - one's just me recording the cabinet in its attract mode for a very loooong time and the other's a gameplay one (with its busted wheels and brake pedals)

Cheers for sharing!

I must admit, i'd like to get the original OR2 running and linked. Maybe it'll happen one day. I did try that trick to disable rubberbanding/catchup, but it doesn't do anything on OR2 SP. Oh well.

Merry Xmas, all :)
