Hey all, got a finished project here to share! I've been wanting to build another cabinet for a while, something that would satisfy a few itches.
- A small cabinet
- Something that looked original but was still a new creation
- Something to play my original games in, with a CRT
I decided to go with a DK3 cabaret! It would take heavy inspiration from the DK cabarets, and also a KLOVer named Phetishboy who created a DK Jr. cabaret which I've loved!
After some talking, I actually commissioned him to make the cabinet shell for me. Then, I just had to worry about electronics, artwork, mounting hardware, building a control panel, wiriing, etc.
The computer is running a PC with CRT emudriver and switchres. It only has about 25 games on it, all vertical games requiring two buttons or less. I'm running AttractMode frontend and the whole thing boots up with the power switch on the back just like a real Nintendo cabinet.
Here is a tour video and I have lots more pictures I can share of the process if people would like to see! Most can already be seen on my website: https://sergiostuff.com/2022/04/10/donkey-kong-3-cabaret-scratch-build/

Thank you for the video and the extensive notes on your build.

You guys hit it out of the park with this one.
And how tall are you anyway?!

Thanks all!

I'm about 6'2". The cabarets are a great size, small enough that they fit anywhere and easy to move around. But big enough I can still stand and play them. They don't feel tiny at all - still feels substantial.

Very nice looking cab!

Looks good. My favorite game to play on my galaga cab. Was originally going to do donkey kong 3 but couldn't pull off the art. Nice job

Looks great!

Sick. Love the form factor. Do you mind me asking how much it cost? I have built 3 similar cabinets and really really really like the size and how you can tuck it in the corner of any room but it's a lot of effort. Was wondering if it's worth looking into paying someone for the shell.

I paid $600 for the empty cabinet. That included laminated sides and a blank control panel. So, not exactly cheap but worth it to me.
I also checked with 417 Arcade (https://417arcades.com/). They initially quoted me like $500 but never got back to me after an initial message. I would have paid for shipping with them too. Phet is local to me so that made things easier.
In any case, the quality is much better than anything I could have done. I'm just not that great of a woodworker.
Phet has since raised his price though. I was his first commission for this particular design and I think he didn't make much of a profit so had to up the cost a bit.

Thanks. Totally reasonable considering the time and effort involved that it saves. Plus, as far as I can tell it’s an exact replica or at least very very close.
I’m jealous - I’d love a DK like this in my basement!
