Title: Question about BioGun with my setup
Post by: AlanS17 on February 27, 2004, 04:17:23 pm
I have an arcade machine that uses a PC monitor at a constant 640X480 resolution. This never changes. All my games are also set to this resolution as well. So here is/are my question(s)...

I read the reviews and it seems that the higher the resolution, the worse a Biogun performs. How is the performance at 640X480, though? Is it good enough to play games decently with or is it really THAT bad?

Plus, if the resolution never changes I should never have to recalibrate, either, right? (since I don't think a Bio gun CAN recalibrate)

Third, can a Biogun be used in a 2-player game with two guns going at once like th Act Labs guns can now?

The Act Labs guns seem like they would be the perfect solution aside from the fact that they are butt-ugly. The Bioguns are great looking guns, but seem to be short in quality. So it seems like a trade-off. Anybody got any advice?

I can think of 3 ways in which it would ALMOST work:

:(I think that the regular build of Mame Analog+ will only work for multiple USB lightguns, and the Bio gun is PS/2, so that's no good.  :(:(Mame Analog+ XP can handle PS/2, but from what I've read, the Bio gun doesn't work at all in Windows XP, so that is out.  :(:(:(Ha ha...  I suspect that the Act Labs USB TV Gun could switch to "player 2" mode, and work fine with the Bio gun, except that it only works on a TV.

It looks like you're out of luck until another solution comes along.

I didn't realize the BioGun was PS2. Well if I were to only use 1 gun, would the BioGun be a decent alternative to the Acts Labs gun with my 640X480 constant resolution?

The Bio Gun seems pretty much out dated if you ask me.  Personally, the fact that it's not USB (and therefore isn't really designed to support several mouse-type devices) and the fact that it can't be used with Windows XP really turn me off.

Perhaps I'm a little bit lost here, but if a device is PS2 then wouldn't it be compatible with just about anything? I mean, it's got standard drivers, I'm sure.

Maybe there's somethng here I'm missing...

(from KevSteele's review at http://www.retroblast.com/reviews/lightgun3.html):

Things went downhill as soon as I tried using the gun, and discovered that the gun only works in Windows 9x. Don't ask me why, as it doesn't use any drivers at all, but it completely refused to work in Windows XP.

*shrug*
