Title: Best GPU for finishing old project? (HD 7770?)
Post by: Tithis on December 15, 2021, 12:03:54 pm
Been years since I've been here, but I'm looking to finally complete an restore/mame conversion of a Wizards of Wor/Bootleg DK JR Midway cocktail machine thats been sitting 80% complete for like 4 years. Thing has been repaired, relaminated, has a new screenprinted galaga glass top, K7000 with new tube+caps+flyback, and new or NOS leafswitch 4-way joystick & buttons with an I-PAC arriving today.

It's been like 6 years since I built my Windows XP + CRT Emu based 25" upright, so I'm out of the loop a bit. I've got my old Intel ITX setup from the Windows 7 era sitting in a box for this. What would people recommend these to get this thing finally up and running in terms of software + GPUs?

edit: Looking at http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,148898.0.html it seems HD7700 are compatible with this Atom-15 tool (might look to patch my uprights 4650 card) and CRT EmuDriver 2.0. If nobody suggest anything else or weighs in I might just go with a HD7770 as they seem reasonably priced and have DVI-I output.

You can keep going more and more expensive for cards, but there's nothing wrong with an HD 7700. Full-featured, and will do the job right. Will almost certainly work with Atom15, but each model card from each manufacturer is different, so there's always a very slight chance it won't.

Just nabbed one for $50 on eBay, will be a bit till it arrives though.

It certainly doesn't need to be powerful, all it will be running are 4-way vertical games.

You can run win7 and Mame on a core2duo quite happily.

What gets me excited is stuff like fanless mini-PCs that have the grunt and (maybe) the video specs, but with low power use, less space and minimal heat output.

I'm in the same boat here -- restarting a project that I haven't updated in well over a decade.  The last card I used to throw a 15khz signal to my arcade monitor was an AGP ArcadeVGA card.

I checked out the compatibly list for CRT Emudriver 2.0 (https://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=295) -- would any motherboard with built-in AMD graphics (supported) and a VGA connector work?
