I was just thinking about how many people are on this board and what a large group of mostly very intelegent people are here, and I got to thinking that some of these people probably do realy cool things for work. So if you work for nasa, build robots for combat purposes or have just about any other job that you think is cooler than the average joe let us know.
-
I build robots for Nasa for combat purposes in space and it is cool!
:P :P :P

I have a cool job... I work in the Nuclear industry. Our American owners have decided we need to be cooler though and are throwing us all into the cold and moving all the jobs to the States. The best part? We're the strongest, most profitable company in our division. Our American sister companies actually lost money last year..... I guess losing one American dollar is better than making three Canadian dollars. I'll never be a CEO. As of this July I'm unemployed.

I'm a stay-at-home dad. I'm poor, but happy!

surprisingly there are a lot of cool jobs listed in the What do you do for a living?? (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=6;action=display;threadid=10291) thread...
I'm a technology coordinator for a non-profit. It's cool in that it's laid back and I get to do a variety of different geeky/techie/web thingies.

I work in a filthy warehouse lifting heavy boxes and breaking my back every day. How cool is that? (I know you all wish you were me!)

I work in a vocational high school teaching juniors and seniors the fine art of residential construction. I get to be outdoors every day. It is a two year program, so it is very laid back and in my position almost stress free. Once in a while we get a discipline problem and then the job isn't as much fun, but for the most part, the kids are very good.

I think my jobs cool. I build web sites for Disney. "Slave to the Rat" isn't just a phrase either :-[

As a U.S. senator I have had a pretty good job for quite some time, but it looks like I will soon have the democrat nomination wrapped up and I don't think President Bush stands much of a chance for reelection. So come this november I will have a REALLY cool job. It'll be a lot of work, but I'll also be one of the most powerful people in the world.
I can't complain.

LOL :) Sadly it looks like my campaign was doomed from the start. I flared brightly from internet money but a 'rousing' speech in Iowa set me back a little. Then I just burned out like a candle in some broken wind.
yeeeaAAAAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!

System Admin at an ISP here. Long stretches of bordedom met with minutes of frustration.
CitznFish - ok you win - Any sites in particular for Disney? I am a Walt Disney World freak (my cab is even the "Tomorrowland Arcade") so I probably have hit some of your pages :)

Oh Man!!! You lucky dog, I want that Job!! I have to Commute 2 hours each way by train to New York City and do Technology Administrative Paper Pushing. I would much rather stay at home with my 2 year old and teach him the ways of MAME. It sure would be nice to go on field trips with him when he enters grammer school just to see the look on his face when the teacher says "Children, this was what your parents used to call and Arcade... Some of the machines are still in working condition but please don't touch them".
Oh well, I guess I could dream because I have to get back on the train Monday morning at 6:30am.... :(

AT least you have a job. Unemployed sounds great until you realize you can't do much with it. Even when I come up with something cheap to do (so far nothing involving MAME), I can't do it because my time is better spent looking for a job.
If someone asks why I'm responding to a poll: I'm networking. I'm sticking to that story too. :)

I have a cool job... I'm a full time student... my girlfriend makes all the money! :)

15 feet is about right.this dozer is called a pushcat it is not made for pushing dirt but pushing scrappers(the big machines on either side of it)i push them as they scrap the ground to fill up with dirt. beleive or not you dont see directly in front of the blade thats why when you see someone running a dozer they will back up until they can see what they are doing then go forward and do it.you mainly watch the bottom edges of the blade and move it acordingly. it takes years to really get good on one. basicly its like anything else practice practice practice.
sidenote: i had my nickname long before i even thought about doing this for a living.

You have my respect. My father was a superintendent on road construction jobs for about 27 years, then had a second career as a motor grader operator for another 20 years before he retired. I know you earn your money, my friend.

I use to have a cool job in high school. It was actually cold. Frozen food section of a grocery store ;)
-
"Training & Solutions Consultant" for a Supply Chain Management Software Company.
Cool thing is... I've seen the world on someone else's money. ;D
-
im at work right now... im a project manager for Honeywell Inc. They make thermostats, energy management controls, that kinda stuff. I have to schedule contractors to install our systems, work with them on the phone to fix stuff, do billing... basicly im a desk slave but its pretty cool. Got my own office and everything, and my boss doesnt care if i play MMORPGs long as my work is done =)
-
I actually work with a new storage virtualization product. The good news is that it's very cutting edge...the bad news is that makes me one of the few "experts" in the world...jeez talk about being too busy to do much work on my cab these days :'(
-
I'm not sure what my job is. I sit in my office and goof off online all day. They've been paying me for it for five years now so I must be doing it right.

I conduct vulnerability assessments (among other things) for a major corporation. I used to be on a leadership development program that let me change jobs often, and even sent me to Brazil for six months.
In high school I worked at an amusement park. Sometimes I worked in the arcade. I had all the fun jobs there including being a blacksmith, dressing up as a costume character, herding reindeer, selling tickets, and managing the park's network and databases (at age 16). I even put together a roller coaster once.
-
I'm a Computer Science undergrad student at the University of Michigan. I am looking for an internship for the summer, but have not found one yet. :-\
So far I have disliked all of my previous jobs. Last summer I worked on warehouse inventory control software. bad times....

....this thread explains to me why I'm one of the few who likes the X Arcade...I'm in the minority of those without some sort of computer/technical background.
I work as a Vice President of National Sales in a large NYC ad agency.
I can make ads look purdy'....but I can't wire a control panel!

Screw building web pages, I have ALWAYS wanted to be a copy writer or director for TV ads. I constantly analyze TV ads that I'm watching on TV and how they're targeted at people's psyche. I love the mental game behind developing ad campaigns, if only the industry wasn't so cut-throat.
-
....you have no idea just how cut throat this industry really is. I'm literally in a shitting match w/our LA office over an account I've been working on since last May!!!!.....it never ends. It's bad enough to get this from you client....it's worse from a "sister" office!!!!!!
Unfortunately, over-all our industry has been pretty screwed since early 2000. It's been all uphill for the last 3 years as marketing/advertising is ALWAYS cut first.
We've been hoping for a break soon....but it still hasn't happened.
???
But I keep plugging away....and playing Pac Man when it gets to be too much....serenity now!!! serenity now!!!!!

Woah, there are some neat jobs some of you have..

Steve,
Funny, I work as a data warehouse developer for a mid-sized IT company. It is pretty fun but in no way cool.
In addition, prior to this I worked as a Project Manager for a tech company serving the foundation/non-profit community. That job was fun, worked with MCI Foundation, March of Dimes, etc.
-
I used to have a real job doing IT for a major pharmacutical company. Quit that about 6 years ago, now I'm a dance instructor & a DJ. Swing dancing mostly.
-
I am a Mortgage Consultant Hows that for boring...Rates are Up or Down I don't remember
-
I used to have a really cool job - I was a trading clerk on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, right in the middle of the crazyness you see on TV.
I have since moved into IT, and am now a Service Delivery Manager. Somewhat boring by comparison.....
-
I'm a porn star, I go by the name "Buck Naked" ;D
-
Motion designer/animator for a major movie studio. None of the cool stuff like special effects though...mostly just moving text around in neat ways. Not as great as it sounds.
-
I work for Siemens VDO and build and program prototype instrument panel clusters for automotive companys like GM, Ford, Volkswagen, BMW, etc.

Between blowing stuff up and melting holes in my shirts I am working on my analytical chemistry PhD. I decided that 21 years of schooling wasn't enough.

I'm a CTO for a legacy software company. We've built an automated engine that translates legacy source code to .NET and Java.
Kinda like Mame (in a way), we preserve whats good about the past.....

VFX for TV commercials. All 2D stuff. Painting, cloning, compositing, plus design and title animation stuff.
Ironically enough, a few months back an agency my company was doing some commercial work for asked if I could create an animation that would look like a late 80's early 90's videogame for a Round Table Pizza spot. I was competing for the job against a high end commercial animation studio. Thanks to Mame I was able to immediately reference the examples they tossed out. Following comments like "kind of a Paperboy feel," or "more of a Narc-like scrolling thing" I was able to pull games up and play them as I was on conference calls discussing them. My company got the job awarded after turning around 3 spec animations before the other studio could even post stills. So Mame has a definite professional application as well.
Here are some stills.
Hands down the most fun I have ever had at work!

My current position is as a project engineer for a material handling company. I primarily work in automotive systems, but on occasion I assist our airport and small product sales divisions.
Mostly I design and layout automotive conveyor systems. So far my largest responsibilities was as lead mechanical engineer on our $50M paint shop system for the Jeep Liberty and our $38M GM Trailblazer/Envoy assembly system. These are the types of systems I typically design:

Probably not the most exciting job in the world, but I sure have a lot fun! :)

Currently I am self employed as a lumber wholesaler/broker. It isn't a glorious or particularly "cool" job but I enjoy it and it pays the bills. I am a woodworker so this somewhat ties into my job as well.
Prior to doing this I was a firefighter for the state of California. We mostly dealt with wildland fires but also structure fires, medical aids, traffic collisions, etc. That job was far more exciting, but I really enjoy the flexibility of working for myself.
