Hi all! Hope everybody can help me out. I'm so frustrated. I'm running mame56 (dos) and arcadeos. Arcadeos has sound just fine but when I go into a game the game doesn't have any. I've tried editing mame.cfg sound (or soundcard can't remember) to 1 and messing with the volume setting as well. I just can't get games to play sound. Can anybody help? Thanks everybody!

If you launch mame from a command line do they have sound? That's the first thing to try. If you do have sound, then the problem is somewhere in your arcadeos config. If not, you have a problem in your mame config.
-
Yeah I tried launching from command line game will play u still no sound. Problem is I haven't touched mame.cfg other than what I originally posted so I don't know what's wrong. Thanks for the advice though.

If you run the game 'gauntlet' does MAME complain about you not enabling sound?
-
I don't have that game available to me right now. Other games don't say anything if that helps. I've tried all the wwf's, 1941,1942,and 1943. Any other suggestions?

I only mentioned Gauntlet because I know that one game gives you grief if you don' t have sound enabled. At least it does in MAME .36

Anybody think maybe because it's the already compiled (I guess that's what you call it) mame rather than me compiling it myself? I don't understand why it plays games but won't play sound. Thanks for any help you all can give me.

I doubt that very much.
What kind of soundcard do you have in your system, and are the DOS drivers loaded?
I remember something about MAME having the drivers to certain cards within the program itself, but not sure if that's true or not.
-
It's a soundblaster ct4170. I believe I've got the right dos drivers cuz arcadeos is using sound when I select 1 for the audio device. Maybe I should try to find some different drivers?
-
Heck, I don't have a clue at this point. Launched from the command line...
Hm...using ArcadeOS, and it has sound...
Have you tried altering the options in ArcadeOS for MAME? Should be right above 'ArcadeOS Options' or something like that when you hit '2'
-
I'm telling ya Peale I have no clue either. I did like you suggested and went into the arcadeos menu by hitting 2. I even went into a game menu and set the sound as sound blaster and messed with the volume and still can't get any sound in game. I guess I'll try downloading a different version of mame and see if that works. I don't know why it'd be any different though. Oh well. I appreciate all your help.

Try checking the SET BLASTER settings in your config.sys against the SB diagnostic programs.
Then disable the sound card driver and see if MAME prompts you for a sound system when you launch it from a command line. You enter the option for Sound Blaster and see if it works then.
Another try would be to transplant the card into a Windows or Linux system and see if MAME works there.
You might also try reinstalling ArcadeOS and MAME from the zip files. You may have forgotten a setting somewhere.
I don't think recompiling will do you any good.
Good luck!
