Title: CHDs
Post by: bjhille on September 08, 2021, 06:25:36 pm
I am in the process of getting the newest Mame set (.235 as of this writing) and am getting the non-merged roms.  There isn't an option to get non-merged chds.  I can only find merged and the rollback chds.  Is this because of the size or do I need to try to find a non-merged CHD set?  Is there a way to make a merged CHD set into a non-merged CHD set?  I want to use the "All Killer No Filler" list so I really only need 10 CHD files.

Thanks for the help.

I don't think this distinction matters for CHD files, because I don't think "bootlegs" exist for a hard disk file. I assume the same disk file will be used for all versions of a game if there are clones/bootlegs.

Perfect!  I was kind of thinking along those lines, but I wasn't sure.  :dunno

Thanks for the confirmation.

The software dictates what file it is looking for and it needs to be the proper file with the proper name and in the proper location to work.
You will get a nag screen if something is wrong.

For only 10 files an individual search may net the best result.

fwiw those 'All Killer' lists are still kinda limited

I did a whole series of episodes on my YouTube channel looking specifically at games that aren't on those lists, and discussing if maybe they made good alternatives or really should have been there

Even outside of that theme, I spend a lot of time looking at overlooked games.

Hello Haze,
Thanks for posting those youtube links for games that were left out of the "no filler" list.
I take no issue with your opinions of the list.  :lol

In the first video though, you mention that the inclusion of rotary joystick games irks you.
If you haven't played them with MAME configured to reliably rotate the character exactly one notch per key press, please give them another try.  Not the same experience as original controls, but very playable.

You probably know how to accomplish this, but for the benefit of anyone else:

Keys would be mapped to AXIS INC/DEC or DIAL INC/DEC.  For a standard "straight 6" arcade panel I map them so that my thumb turns left, index finger fires, and my middle finger turns right.  The main AXIS or DIAL input should not be mapped to anything.

To get them to only move one notch per key press:

(from the BYOAC wiki)
Quote
MAME Settings for Mechanical Rotary Joysticks

 For mechanical rotary games:

 "Input (this Game)" menu

     Positional Analog to none

 "Analog Controls" menu

     Positional Digital Speed = 0
     Positional Sensitivity = 100

 For optical rotary games:

 "Input (this Game)" menu

     Dial Analog to none

 "Analog Controls" menu

Dial Digital Speed = double the default value
     Dial Sensitivity = default value

These instructions are on the first post of both original threads, but people could be getting that list from elsewhere now.

If you've already played them this way and consider it garbage....carry on.

Yeah the videos were a bit of fun.

I do think the lists are a good starting place, but I'll always encourage people to explore further / decide what works for them rather than just using the lists and pretending like nothing else exists, which I was starting to see a lot of.

I agree you can play some of the rotary games play fairly well like that, better than the joystick hacks which force you to fire in the same direction as you're moving.  Those hacks make some games near enough impossible as they were designed around you being able to take out enemies not directly in your line of sight, or being able to retreat and fire at the same time.  I've seen so many people say 'just use the 8-way joystick hack versions' and that is terrible advice, makes the game so much harder than they need to be.

99% of the time I'm using a keyboard to play these things.
