Title: Optical Steering
Post by: spisi on May 27, 2021, 12:05:07 pm
Would it be possible to incorporate two optical steering wheels for use with Project64 (mario kart)?

I have two working optical 360 steering wheels that work in MAME.  I'd like to use them for Mario Kart as well. Does anybody have any ideas?

Is there a way?  Probably.   Should you even try?  Nope.   The N64 thumbstick is an absolute joystick.   By that I mean the exact position of the joystick is read and reported.   Optical wheels are relative, meaning when you turn it only the amount you've turned the wheel is reported and not the exact position.   In addition, thumb sticks have a return to center spring and 360 degree wheels do not.  Without getting too technical, what this means is the games are going to rely on knowing the exact position of the wheel at all times and the fact that the wheel snaps back to center when you let go and your wheels aren't going to have that regardless of the interface and software used.
