Title: Using a spinner for Asteroids question
Post by: Velvis on May 25, 2021, 01:59:29 pm
I have a CP layout that doesn't lend itself to Asteroids, so I set it up using my spinner for left/right. It works fine but the spin speed is slower than I would like. Normally I'd tweak it with the analog controls built into mame, but that's not present because it's not an analog game.

Is there another way to increase the spin?

Pretty sure in MAME you can map mouse inputs to digital inputs unless this was removed at some point (it's been a while).  Start Asteroids and hit TAB and then for rotate left/rotate right just remap the controls to the spinner.  I think you have to spin hard but not too hard for it to be recognized.  It should behave like a button press... I think.

Tried this on v0.229.

As you point out, there's no menu in this game for analog sensitivity.   :(

There is no difference in rate of rotation between using a TurboTwist2 turning rapidly vs. pressing/holding a button or joystick.

Using a lower-resolution trackball seems to result in a slower rate of rotation.

You might want to try using a joystick for left/right.   ;D

The game used two buttons for turning. It's not analog. You can use a spinner but its going to move the same speed as it would when you use the buttons. Nothing you can do unless you hack the game somehow. Maybe play Blasteroids instead which is an updated version that uses a spinner.

I have a version of mame you can use which has been compiled to allow certain games to use a spinner. Asteroids was one of them I believe and so was time pilot and gyruss. Have fun.

I've always preferred Asteroids using the joystick to turn L/R. Probably leftover from when I used to play it on Atari back in the day. So if you map it that way, you should be good to go and only need 3 buttons.
