Title: Which button config is better?
Post by: mvaughn on February 25, 2004, 03:54:27 pm
I've been asking alot of questions lately about control panels...

I've decided to go with a 7 button configuration for neo-geo and capcom support.

There are two configurations that I have seen.  The 4 neo-geo are on the top row aligned to the right, OR the 4 neo-geo are on the bottom aligned to the left.

Does anyone have any preference?  What are the pros and cons of each?

From what I understand, A is easier to setup in mame since you don't have to change the input map between Capcom and Neo-Geo games.  They would be setup like this:

1234
456

I prefer the B setup though, just so I'm not pushing other buttons while I'm playing Neo-Geo based games.  You would have to remap your keys for your Neo-Geo games in the B config though.  There have been a couple discussions about this paticular question already.

I've been thinking about this a lot of late, and I've had a selection of different layouts in my mind, I've got a few empty a4 paper boxes from work and made some prototype layouts too, and so far I've still not decided which to go for.

I orginaly started off thinking I'd have 8 buttons, but of late I've started to consider just having the 7.

Heres some more ideas for you..  Currently I'm favoring D.

I personnaly like E but with the thumb button slightly lower than pictured.  Having the curve in the buttons also feels better to me.

A is perfect for capcom fighting games, SNK games, and Mortal Kombat games where you have the run button in the corner. BOOOOOYA!!!! A

Its a combination of personal perference, and what kind of games you will be playing on your cp.  I loved the Virtua Fighter 2 layout of 3 buttons in an arc (customized to match my thumb, index and middle finger lengths).  I also liked the Soul Edge/Soul Calibur 4 button layout which is exactly the same as VF2 but with one more button in line with the 3rd.  Lastly I like the 6 button in a row fighters (ala SF2) and the 4 button fighters (ala Tekken).  I do not like the neo-geo 6 button arcing...because I never played on those cabs before.

So I ended up with a 6 button cluster in a row (ala SF2), and then 2 more buttons arcing downward off the left like VF2.  With this layout I can play VF, SF, SC, Tekken just like the arcade.  Playing classics with the thumb and index finger button is also preferable to me in this setup.

Here is a pic of my cp, its hard to see but the last 2 buttons in the row are black.  Lower 4 colored buttons are for Soul Calibur, first 4 color buttons out of the 6 are for tekken, and the 6 in row are for Street Fighter type.

This is my choice... since you can reconfigure all of the neo-geo games in a batch then it makes sense to me.

    4   5   6
    1   2   3
7
