Title: So who'se going to the Starburst auction this weekend?
Post by: JoeB on February 24, 2004, 11:09:01 pm
anyone?

I haven't been there for a year!  Torn between staying with my one cab or getting another one.

Any good project ideas for a person who just moved away from home and into an apartment with his fiancee??   ;D

makin babies?

Seriously though, by all counts the starburst auction has been getting a little overpriced.  My last time was in the summer, and real junker games were going to $200+  maybe it's settled down some though, but probably not... best stay home and service the woman, it'll help more down the road: "but remember when we were engaged and I stayed home to rub your feet instead of buy another ugly cab for the apartment????? YOU OWE ME!!"  :)

The last auction had (dare I say it) dirt cheap pricing--I picked up some really nice stuff for a very good price--Now I'm not saying this one will be the same, but winter auctions after X-mas tend to have lower attendance.

I was talking with my girlfriend last night about how I was going to the auction and that I might meet up somebody from "the message board" and then I hinted that I might even be able to meet somebody who had a truck and could help me bring a cab home (I have trouble fitting cabs into my protege).

Anyways, you should have seen her face.  She definately put her foot down (just like when I told her I was going to buy a mechanical horse at an auction).  Apparantly one cab is enough.  ???

so... I'll be working on her before saturday, so if everything works out, can any of you guys help haul a cab downtown for me (or help me fit it in my protege  ;D )?

I've never been to this auction.  So I'm wondering, what can I expect?  Usually how many cabs are they auctioning off?

as many as 140 and as few as 20--there's no way to predict, except that the auction before christmas should be avoided at all costs (actually the 2 before x-mas) prices are way too high (bloody mamer's) ;)--it should be milder this weekend so expect a few people there--if there's alot of people and a few machines, you might as well turn around and go home--too much competition :-\

Here's an idea...

We need to be able to indentify the BOYAC members who are there.  So we don't overbid each other... I mean, if there's alot of BOYAC members there, we could control the bidding war.  Therefore we all win by getting a cabinet at a good price.  As I'm looking to find a "decent" 25 or 27 inch cabinet to "Mame".  So I can give it too my brother for his Birthday.

As I said, I've never been too one of these and don't know if we can control the bidding... but its an idea.

I'm going to be wearing a red jacket and most likely be bring my wife.  I'm not sure if that's a good idea, as she will most likely try too "control" my spending.  But we'll see...  Maybe I can drop her off at Sam's Club or Costco before hand.

Another Question: Are they expecting that once you win a cabinet, that you take it right then and there??  Can you come back later and pick up the cabinet??

My name is Kostas and feel free to come talk to me..

You have to pick it up on Monday.  There is a $5 (I think) storage fee per day past monday.

I was thinking about the whole BYOAC outbidding thing and although I would hate to outbid people who were mamers, it still is fair game.  I mean, if I will pay 100, and you will pay 75, then I should leave with it at 100.  But then it would be nice if there was some way to see a cab and decide that I will go up to 100, you will go up to 75, so we decide to let me have it at $50.

But that doesn't work at all, because ultimately, you would pay 75 and I would pay 100, so again, I leave with it for 100.

Did that make any sense?

Well, don't worry too much, I likely wont be bidding...

Best of luck.

I'm going to be wearing a red jacket and most likely be bring my wife.

And I'm going to be the guy with in the black jacket.   :)

That's not very desciptive.  In all honesty, it's an auction.  Who ever has the deepest pockets gets it.  The problem I see with starburst is not the MAMEers, but rather the dealers!

When ever a hobbiest goes up against a person who eyes that machine as their bread and butter, the hobbiest will always loose.  I also believe there is some shill bidding going on there..  Don't get stuck in a bidding war against the owner of the cab!
