Title: Looking for Perfect Joystick
Post by: D_Harris on February 22, 2021, 02:28:56 am
I'm curious how things have changed over the past decade because I need some joysticks for a couple of new projects.

I attempted to use the search but only get the message: "Unable to access the search daemon".

The last control panels I built about a decade ago required me to route out templates so I could seat the joystick bases because the sticks were too short. I'd like to avoid having to do that this time around and wanted to know if there were better joystick options for wood control panels.

Can anyone suggest a joystick assembly that,

A) Has a shallow body
B) Has a high-sitting joystick
C) Is switchable between 2, 4, & 8-way
D) Durable
E) Isn't noisy

I'd prefer leaf switches, but I'm sure that would be asking too much.  ;D

If I have to drop one of those qualifications I guess it would be "B".

(I'm open to changing out joystick parts if I have to to get what I want).

Thanks.

I just built a couple bartops and used the Dominux 8 joysticks.  I had a 3/4" panel and they mounted flush underneath if you order the long shaft.  They are not switchable on the fly but it is possible to unscrew them and change out the restrictor plate.  I had a spare one that had no restrictor plate so it worked fine for 8 way but I wanted 4 ways.  So I ordered a 4 way and then I copied the restrictor plate and cut out another one on my CNC and made both sticks work as 4 way.  But if I want 8 way it is possible to pull the stick off and remove the plate.  In reality you never want to take that time.  Its best to just design a cab with one joystick type and either have swappable panels or limit yourself to games that work with that joystick and then just build multiple cabs. ;)

I'm after the same thing.
Have a bunch of parts to franken-build something to your spec list but haven't had time as of late.
Hopefully I can get to it in a few weeks and I'll post what I come to (unless somebody beats me to it!)

I imagine it has been done already but you never know.

+1 on the Dominux8.   I have two of them set up as 4-ways in an X-Arcade.  They work amazing.   I also have a Ultimarc Ultra 360 stick that I just got, and that thing feels GREAT!!  I put the heavy spring in, and I LOVE IT!!!!  Easy software to chose between 2-way, 4-way, 4-way diagonal (Q*Bert, Congo Bongo), 8-way or Analog.  Just open the app on your windows, pick how you want the stick to behave, and in the blink of an eye, BOOM!  You got it!  Q*bert plays AMAZING!!  Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and other 4-way games are the same way.   People were complaining about 8-way, but I have no problems.

The Dominux8 would work for me.

It doesn't have a shallow body, and it is not switchable between 2, 4, & 8-way. (Though I'd settle for just 4 & 8 way).

Thanks.
