Anyone here ever remove the screen from a laptop and make an extension cable for mounting it a few feet away?
I know about LCD controllers which allow you to repurpose an old laptop screen for connection to an HDMI (or vga or dvi) port of a pc.
I'm running a simple Pinball FX3 cab with a laptop. The one HDMI out is feeding the 42" playfield. There are no USB-Cs or display port.
I'm not planning on a full backglass, just wanna use the screen for a DMD.
I will experiment & build a 30 pin extension cable but wanted to know if anyone had any experience with this.

The problem with that is signal degradation and interference. Far easier to use a controller board and use a decent shielded VGA/HDMI extension cable.
I bought an AOC USB3 monitor for use as an active marquee for my 1up. It is the same size as a laptop screen and at $99 at Best Buy it is a easier solution.
Mounting it is easy with VESA, but needs a USB3 port for power. Very happy with it.

Yeah, I've looked at the controller boards. Definitely a cool gadget. My problem is that the laptop I'm using on this project only has one HDMI output which is going to my main display. and no Display port or USB C connections which would make it easier to add another display.
I know I can add USB to VGA/DVI but it sounds like that could be a hit on cpu performance and not always compatible with all video GPUs.

When I run out of options I look for cheap alternatives like a PI4 or an old PC. If you are doing something like a mini virtual pinball machine, I could understand your situation for extending the screen.
