So I purchased this off of Game Room Solutions
https://gameroomsolutions.com/shop/joystick-button-bundle-kits/
And I'm pretty disappointed with it. My biggest complaint is I find the movement of the joystick doesn't feel like a true 360 degrees. It feels more like 8 directions.
I found it very difficult to pull off simple dragon punches in Street Fighter 2.
My other complain is the microswitches that came with the kit are so... clicky. The button presses click, the joystick clicks when you move it. I don't like it, and it doesn't feel at all what I grew up with playing in the 90s. I emailed the company and asked if they knew where to get non clicky microswitches and he said he didn't.
From my research, it looks like US arcades used Happ parts. For instance, I found this. It also says 8-way, so I'm not sure if its the same thing as the arcades I remember:

Please help!

I'd recommend the IL Eurostick: https://focusattack.com/industrias-lorenzo-8-way-eurojoystick-black/#reviews (https://focusattack.com/industrias-lorenzo-8-way-eurojoystick-black/#reviews)
They sell a replacement joystick shaft to use a balltop if you want to keep the balltop look.
Groovygamegear sells better switches, but you usually have to buy buttons to get them. https://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=92&products_id=346 (https://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=92&products_id=346)
I'd recommend switching over to older style concave buttons if it's not too late. I built a cab with modern convex Japanese buttons because I wanted it to look modern. On games that use more than 3 buttons, I find myself loosing track of where my fingers are and looking down to reset my hands. If I had it to do over again, I would use concave buttons.

Does this joystick click?
Also, how does the movement feel? Is it circular, or does it feel stiff like going from one direction to the other?

All joysticks that use microswitches click, but none as loud as Sanwa.
-
Are there any that don’t use micro switches?
What did the 90s USA SF 2 cabinets use?
-
They would have used microswitches but not all microswitches feel the same. If you're really bothered by clicking I would recommend the microleaf switches from GroovyGameGear.

They used to sell an optical switch mod for the Sanwa JLFs. I have that with round restrictors and stiffer springs. It is silent and I am happy with the setup, but have probaly spent $200 getting there.
The ultimarc U360 uses a hall effect sensor, but I have noa experience with them:https://www.ultimarc.com/arcade-controls/joysticks/ultrastik-360-oval-top-clone/
The original SFII cabs probably had Happ supers or comps. Some arcade purists on here should be able to tell you better than me.
The IL stick I recommended is the closest thing to what was in Mortal Kombat cabs. Yes the movement is round. The switches click, but not nearly as loud as the Sanwa and more importantly you can swap in quieter microswitches if the ones it comes with are too loud. I saw the black ones were oos at focusattack. Paradise arcade also sells them.

I have 2 U360 with restrictors, stiffer springs and I recommend them. No click and, that's what I wanted. I don't know how they compare with other joystick.
