So I recently finished my own bartop build, but I'm having trouble figuring out how I can attach the heat sink to the motherboard...
Let me explain. So I had detached the motherboard from the PC case it came in, and I screwed it directly onto my bartop cabinet with some wood spacers.
However, I didn't realize that the screws from the heat sink are "special" screws that apparently screwed directly into the case of the PC.
For reference, this is the exact heat sink:

Any ideas on how I could attach this to my cabinet? I'm thinking I would have to get some sort of nut that is similar to what was found on the PC case, but I have no idea what it is (and I foolishly tossed out the PC case).

That's a standard LGA 115x type cooler, why not just use a different one that attaches to the board? I would think a nut would work as well, though you might wanna find a back plate.

How would it attach to the board though? The motherboard literally just has a hole for a screw like that to go through.. but the screw still needs to fasten to something.
also, I already have the heat sink, seems a bit silly to buy a whole new one.
I thought about removing the machine screws with wood screws but I can't figure out how to remove the screws either!

Just go to the hardware store and buy some nuts. Take the heatsink in with you so you get the right size. You're kind of over thinking this here. The screw is more then likely riveted in, but that's no big deal. I wouldn't think it would be hard at all to find a 5 cent nut that threads on it. You just put your thermal paste on, then the heat sink, flip the board over and put on the back plate, then the new nuts and you're good. Sure it may have originally screwed down to the case frame, but big deal, that's just one of those goofy HP things they do.
