So, I picked up a Spy Hunter CP. I want to connect it to a U-HID. There are so many wires!!! 15 in total. The 10 from the steering wheel is the confusing part. I guess two for each button / trigger and two for the weapons button. But which colors do what? I have the diagram but don't quite understand it.... Can't even figure out which wires are GRND. There's no black wires.

The last two pages of the manual here (https://www.arcade-museum.com/manuals-videogames/S/SpyHunter.pdf) show the schematic for the "Absolute Position PC" PCB.
That PCB has an 8-bit A/D converter (adc0804) that provided digital steering and gas position info to the original PCB, but you won't need it because you are using a U-HID.
For the steering and gas pot connections, use the J1 (7 position) connector shown on your diagram. (Detailed pinout on page 58.)
For the buttons and lamps, look on page 27-28. (The schematic you posted appears to be from page 27.)

Thanks, but I'm not understanding how to read the diagram. What does SEL, ARD, Q0-Q7 mean? Also, the colors don't seem to match with what I have.....

What does SEL, ARD, Q0-Q7 mean?
If I had to guess off the top of my head, probably Select, Read, and Data Bits 0-7 -- that said, there's nothing on or after the "Absolute Position PC" 8-bit A/D encoder PCB that the U-HID can command or translate.
For steering and gas you need 5v, wiper, and ground connections from the two pots connected to your U-HID encoder since you are not connecting the command and data lines of the "Absolute Position PC" PCB to a an original Spy Hunter PCB.
You need to either use the pot wire connections at the J1 (7 position) connector that plugs into the "Absolute Position PC" or wire the U-HID directly to the pots.
J1 pinout from pg. 58
Pins 1, 4 - Ground
Pins 2, 3 - 5v
Pin 5 - Key
Pin 6 - Steering pot wiper (center tab)
Pin 7 - Gas pot wiper (center tab)
Also, the colors don't seem to match with what I have.....
Don't worry about the wire colors, just make sure that you've got the wipers right and don't short 5v to ground. ;)
If you accidently reverse 5v and ground the pot will operate in the opposite direction expected.

EDIT: If you're having trouble understanding the pots in the schematic:
- The zig-zag is the resistive element.
- The arrow pointing at the zig-zag is the wiper. (center tab on the pot)
- One end of the zig-zag connects to 5v and the other end connects to ground. (outer tabs on the pot)

What's a wiper? :( EDIT: OK just read the wiki...

What does "Absolute Position PC" mean? I'm guessing J1 7 POS refers to the POT and J2 POS refers to the steering wheel. As far as the steering wheel goes, I have 10 wires, diagram shows 12 wires. There are 8 data bits? Should be 5 I would think. One each for the two triggers and two buttons on the steering wheel and one for the weapons van (center button on steering wheel). I see no black wires to indicate a ground, and no red wires for 5V...There is however four yellow wires :dunno This is the harness with everything (steering, shifter and Pot)
-
This is the one I need figured out, the 10 wires that come from the steering column
-
So you have a bundle of wires (10) coming from the steering column, then (3) from the pot and (2) from the shifter. The shifter should be no problem, the pot should be easy as well. It's the 10 wire bundle that's a problem...

What does "Absolute Position PC" mean?
It's the name of printed circuit board Part# A080-91649-B000.
- The copy of the manual I'm looking at shows a newer revision A080-91649-C000.
- If you want to see what the PCB looks like, there's a layout diagram on page 56 of the manual. Looks like it is about 3" x 3", maybe a bit larger.
https://www.arcade-museum.com/manuals-videogames/S/SpyHunter.pdf (https://www.arcade-museum.com/manuals-videogames/S/SpyHunter.pdf)
I'm guessing J1 7 POS refers to the POT
J1 = Jack 1
7 POS = 7 position connector (6 wires, 1 key)
J2 POS refers to the steering wheel.
J2 = Jack 2
16 POS = 16 position connector
-------------
Let's make sure that you're looking at the right connector for the pots.
Start at either the steering pot (page 20, index 24) or the gas pot (page 18, index 3) and follow the three pot wires back to a 7 position connector with 6 wires.
- That should be the J1 shown in the schematic you posted.
The other wires coming from the steering column are going to be either ground, switches or the Weapons Van button lamp.
Switches are shown on page 28, J4 19 POS, pins 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 15 or page 36 layout diagram or you can see the connection to the "Super Sound I/O" PCB on the schematic on page 40, the two boxes in the middle labeled "74LS244" have inputs like "J4-5" (J4 pin 5) or "J4-10" (J4 Pin 10) coming in from the right.
Lamps are shown on page 27, Lamp Driver PC, J1.
- Looks like the Weapons Van lamp on pin 6 drives the lamp on the panel and the lamp on the button.
You can see the Weapons Van lamps on the panel and button at around 14:33.

Thank you so much! Perfect, that's what I was looking for! :D
-
That was super helpful, thanks again!
I have all the buttons, triggers, weapons van button and shifter working!!! The steering wheel is another issue.
I'm 99.99% sure I have it wired correctly, but it's acting erratic. At first it only recognized right turns. I made an adjustment to the offset in the U-HID, then it only would turn left. I played with the offset but could not get it to work correctly. Is there a way to calibrate it?
EDIT: Yes there is a way to calibrate it. In Windows! So now it is centered nicely :applaud: on to the next issue. There seems to be a large dead zone in game, but not in the Windows test screen.
I fiddled with the settings in MAME but it's still there. Additionally when you get out of the dead zone it steers too much.....I drive right off the road and crash :o
-
Figured it out! In MAME.ini there's a setting for the deadzone, it's set at 30% ??? which makes no sense to me, but thanks everyone for all your help. LOL!
