Title: Silly question - can I have a default .lay file?
Post by: P-chan on October 12, 2020, 12:47:43 am
I'm on MAME 0.225 and am comfortable with creating .lay files and bezel art.  Ideally the default.lay file would apply to any game that didn't have an actual layout/bezel .zip.

Pretty sure that's possible but you'll need two .lay files -- one for horizontal games and one for vertical games.

Seems like the widescreen "Generic Horizontal Artwork" (genhorizontal.lay (https://mrdo.mameworld.info/artwork/genhorizontal.zip)) and "Generic Vertical Artwork" (genvertical.lay (https://mrdo.mameworld.info/artwork/genvertical.zip)) files on Mr.Do's would be a good starting point for your partially-masked vertically-mounted widescreen build.   ;D

Thanks for the link!  I'm ok on creating the generic horiz and vert artwork, I just don't know how to tell MAME to use these files if there isn't an actual layout for that game.  Or do I have to do that manually?

I'm creating the artwork and lay files for most of my favorites, but if anything else is chosen, I want there to be a "default" lay file that's used.

Open up mame.ini, and look for "fallback artwork" and "override artwork".

This sounds like what I needed, thanks I'll check it out!

More info on how to make it work with MAME v0.194 or newer at https://www.mameworld.info/mrdo/mame_artwork_generic.php (https://www.mameworld.info/mrdo/mame_artwork_generic.php).
