Title: Second arcade build
Post by: Seob on September 22, 2020, 04:10:11 pm
So I just love the build. Having finished my first arcade cabinet, I couldn’t resist building a second one.
My first one is pc based running hyper spin. But for this one I wanted to go with a raspberry pi4 to keep the cost down.

Since my 10 year old son loves tinkering with his electronic experiment box. I thought this would be a nice project to make with him. The cutting I did myself, but putting the cabinet together he helped. Going to paint it together with him and then I will let him do the wiring with my help. Setting up the raspberry pi with retropie is also a task he is going to do. So in the end he can say he has build a arcade.
The control panel artwork I put together taking his wish into account. The arcade will be white with chrome t-molding.

Interested in seeing how this looks.

Interesting design choice with the "player-2 only" control panel layout.

Left is for a future spinner.

Did some filling, and we put on the first layer of paint.

I messed up the acrylic by using a sharp drill to widen some holes. Now I need to redo the control panel acrylic.

Looks good so far.  I wish my son had an interest in this stuff but he’s too busy with Minecraft and whatever else on the Xbox with his friends.  I’m hoping his love for building fake houses in Minecraft eventually lead him to wanting to build something in real life but I’m not holding my breath...

I’m lucky he is also big into build with Lego. So after they used up they’re gaming time, he starts building with Lego.

Some artwork pre fit. Ordered the vinyl at a local printshop. Should be in coming week. Tomorrow we are going to do some installation.

You look young so I won't kill you too bad, but you didn't finish your first arcade unless you built a building housing several arcade machines.  You built an arcade machine or an arcade cabinet.  Your new one appears to be a bartop machine.   Individual games are not "arcades"

Anyway, progress looks good.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the young looking comment from a 47 year old. But anyway English isn’t my first languages so forgive me for not addressing the title correctly.
But this being my second build, and the fact I build my own house, I’m getting there.
Added a picture of my first arcade cabinet.

I fixed the view of the photo's llike mentioned in the thread, but it now displays it correct in the text box, but it still displays it as attachment in the bottom of the article. Is there a way to get the attachments not showing up?

I found it. http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,139723.msg1445482.html#msg1445482

Spray painted the top en bottom marquee holder chrome, since i didn't like the look of the white bezel.

Place for the amp, cooling, reset button for raspberry, power jack, and above power jack a place for a switch to turn on the monitor in case i need it.

Artwork attached. Note for next time. Do not use guide lines printed on the art, and print 5% bigger then you need.

Finished. Ready to play.

On to the next build. Now i’m going to build one together with my oldest son. Ordered a new router that is arriving  today, so the next t-molding will be death center. At one point i’m going to redo the monitor bezel art because it isn’t straight on, and because i didn’t leave 5% overlap i cannot hide the errors. Lesson learned. Also going to redo the t-molding on the left side of the cabinet since i did cut the back to do the bent next to the monitor, but this leaves ugly marks on the bezel front.

I like the angry Panda. It looks like he just got done playing Defender.

I like this build. looks great! Also its good that your son is taking an interest and you are passing your skills along to him.
Just something about a young person learning to solder! It is a skill he can take with him from now on.
